Mitten Shell
I'm looking for a shell to go over mittens...I have a pair of wool mittens from Ibex that I really like, as well as Ibex Shak glove liners. Rather than buying new mittens with included liners, etc., I thought a shell to go over the mitts would complete my system.
Can anyone suggest a good shell for mittens? Thanks. |

I have never tried bar mitts, but i bet they are great too.
I use a Outdoor Research Pro Goretex mitt over my gloves. http://robonza.blogspot.com/2010/02/...ld-winter.html But they are big, no insulation, just a full gauntlet glove. I gotta say they keep your hands warm and dry. I was thinking of getting a smaller pair, and was told about the mountain laurel eVent mitt, which looks really good. I was going to order a pair. http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com...products_id=51 For most of the winter I ride in those OR mittens, with OR 400 mittens underneath. But when it is really cold I wear some big primaloft mitts. -joe

I have some Treks that are lobster claw. I would guess they make them for mittens too. Just a shell with a gauntlet and elastic around the wrist.

outdoor research.
sometimes outdoor equipment stores have a generic version, usually made out of coated nylon instead of fancy/expensive gore tex or similar. |

Thanks guys.
I forgot about the bar mitts. I'm going to look at both suggestions of bar mitts and mitt shells and see what will work for me. I like moving my hands around on the bars, so shells be best. |

I found these at REI:
Outdoor Research Meteor Mitts - have a removable liner ($65) REI Item# 7870690034 REI Taped Mittens - shell only ($56.50) REI Item# 7872890046 I'm going to see how they fit over my Ibex mitts. These also look good: mountain laurel eVent mitt http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.co...?products_id=51 Last edited by 93legendti; 12-25-2010 at 10:53 PM. |

A few weeks ago I got a pair of Swix lobster gloves at REI that fit over my thin liners when it's VERY cold. They are also good on their own. Highly recommended.
There is a mitten version too. I paid $45. |

Alternative to Bar Mitts:
http://www.trails-edge.com/retail/mo...moosemitts.htm Called Pogies in some parts of the world. You can get ATV ones for a lot less $$$ or make your own. http://coachlevi.com/mountain-biking...-hand-warmers/ mIKE |

how about the same thing for us five finger fans?*
I had an old pair of OR goretex shell only over-gloves that were the perfect thing for winter cycling but since they disintegrated I can't find a replacement VF * needed for certain impolite hand signs to motorists (it's an NYC thing) |

The REI shells seem to be the solution. The fit well over my Ibex mitts and go on and off very easily:

Thanks for bringing this post back up . Over the winter I bought a new pair of OR shell mittens. The model I got was the Endeavor mitt. I have been very happy with them. they are a bit lighter than my old mitts but have proven just as dry and warm.
