Left ergopower problem

I have a very annoying problem with my left ergopower lever

When I push the thumb button to downshift everything is fine, but next time I want to shift into the big ring, the shift paddle moves freely without engaging the ratchet mechanism. I have found, that if I push the shift paddle hard to the left first, it works. It is an all new build - old type Centaur levers.

Anybody know how to fix this?

I'd wonder about the rubber hood binding against the shift mechanism underneath the front of the lever.

Dave is the ergo guru here, so perhaps he'll chime in...
