Mid-Atlantic Century in June

Does anyone know of a good, scenic, moderately hilly century ride in the Mid-Atlantic states (which, for me, are VA, eastern WV, MD, eastern PA, DE and southern NJ) during June? I'm looking for a tune-up century to the Blue Ridge Brutal in NC later in the summer, and don't have spousal dispensation to go too far from home in the DC area. If there's not a good one, I'll just find a nice route and go by myself, but if there's a good supported one I thought I'd do that.

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts.

The Keystone (Escape to the Lake) MS 150 is scheduled for 07-08 June 08. The ride starts about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh and day 1 has a century option. Overall, day 1 is a bit hilly so it might fit your bill. About a 4 hour drive from northern VA. It's very well organized and draws 1,500-2,000 cyclists.

I'm doing the tour de cure in pittsburgh on June 22nd. Its a nice ride with cool roads, low traffic and not a ton of people. I think last year there were 40 century starters.

Earlier than that, I am doign the 75 miles of mon-tour:

Its says its a race, but it doesn't sound like one....with the water and pbj aid stations.

Bike Virginia is in June, and I believe there are going to be two century opportunities. It's in the southwest corner of VA, in the mountains, so plenty of hill opportunities.

Bike Virginia is one of the best run large cycling events in the country.

I am usually good for 1 or 2 centuries a weekend. If you send me a pm with your email, I will forward the address to a friend of mine who does 2 centuries a weekend.

Late May near Blacksburg, VA - two rides (actually 3) go out on the same weekend. The Wilderness Road Ride and Mountains of Misery (choose either a century or a double metric). The double has 13K feet of climbing and is just a beautiful ride.

Checkout the Freedom Valley Bike Ride

Starts in Philly and is sponsored by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. http://www.bicyclecoalition.org/
Sunday, June 15th. Usually a metric ride however they have a long option that approaches 80 miles. Not overly hilly however you can easily add miles and hit some descent hills too.

Good luck,

Bob

Blue Ridge Brutal

When and where is the Blue Ridge Brutal? Sounds like a nice road trip south.

The start/finish is in Ashe County, NC near the town of West Jefferson, between Boone and North Wilkesboro. The date is August 16.

I actually don't know a whole lot about it, but the buzz I've read online makes it sound like a scenic, well-run event, and the timing works out for me. I did the Cheat Mountain Challenge in West Virginina last year (also a really fun century with lots of climbing - highly recommended), but I thought I'd try a different one this time around.

If anyone has any past experiences with this event to report, I'd be interested in hearing them.

Thanks everyone also for the suggestions on June centuries.

The NC Bike Club has a web page with a list of centuries: http://ncbikeclub.org/calendar/century.htm. Hope this helps.
