Holy Leg Cramping Bat Man!

Okay, what did I do wrong here?

I've been riding somewhat consistently, and came to an abrubt halt in the name for a five day vacation in Ft. Lauderdale this past weekend. The first few days, I did some stretching and acted like I was an athlete. The last two days, fuggedaboutit! All five days, ate like crap.

So, today, even BEFORE I rode my legs felt crampy. Weird, like they were on the verge of spasming, all in the lower area of the top of the thigh, and on that inner-melon muscle above/inside the knee. Then I went riding (w/out stretching first) and the leg started cramping up; it felt like balls of spasm in that same area. Weird. I stopped a few miles in, stretched a bit, and conitinued on. The spasming persisted.

Now, I'm sitting here, and I feel like somebody took a baseball bat to that muscle above/inside the knee (yes, the spasming was outside that area originally too). What did I do so wrong? Did a lack of stretching really wreak all that havoc? Or is there something else potentially amiss?

And, no I don't think I was short of salt or potassium (I ate everything in site). Bananas not needed!

I don't think stretching or lack of it is the problem.

Likely it's a combo of fatigue and dehydration.

Lotsa things change when you go on vacation . . .

. . . that you might not think about. You're not only eating different. You're sleeping on a strange mattress that may be too hard or too soft. If you're flying or going by car you're sitting for long periods of time when you may not be used to it--and on a plane these days you may be twisted like a pretzel. I have a really firm mattress at home and have felt like cr@p on vacations before because the hotel mattress was soft as cotton candy, or I was sleeping on a therma-rest pad in a tent. Or you may have slept all night with your leg twisted under you without realizing it. I'd give it three or four days and if it keeps doing the same thing, then start worrying.

Thanks Grant and BBD. Darren, as usual, I'm left speechless.

Your points are all probably valid, I'm just trying to sort out in which order! I think that the dehydration could be a valid point, but it only occurred in certain regions/muscle groups. The changes of my vacation could be it too, but... man... maybe I'm just getting old? It's soo strange. I've had this tightness before, but not like this. I mean, we didn't go very hard or far today, and just that one muscle above the knee (and some residual stress in the lower thigh) feels like we rode vertical for an hour and a half.

Oh, well. I'm not too worried, just thought it was strange. Thanks for the input!

My legs get crampy during a ride following a night of drinking. If I drink just a couple of beers the night before a ride, my leg muscles will cramp in the same place you described. Just saying. FWIW.

Good to know. Come to think of it, being on an airplane can dehydrate you, so dehydration is a possibility. M legs are sore this morning and I have my first race this Sunday - yikes! That'll learn me!

When I go out of town, I tend to do way more walking and standing around than normal and the leg muscles aren't used to it - so they get stiff, sore and "crampy". It takes a week or so for the riding to feel good again.

I had leg cramps once in 1983 when I was 16 and didn't know that you had to drink water or eat anything.

Haven't had a cramp since. I guess I am lucky cuz my training buddy here in Michigan will start to get cramps after about 50 miles of hard riding or even less of really hard riding. I feel like I am starting to just get warmed up.

Difference in how different people process nutrients through their muscles I guess.

No, but everything looks faster going by, so you think you're faster. Been there, done that.
