An Old Italian Pro....

Any sources of info on ex-pros?
One of my students has a great uncle who was apparently a pro in Italy before WW2. He came to the U.S. shortly before the war and served in the U.S. Army. After the war, apparently, he raced in the U.S. Any ideas on tracking down more info on his career? He is terminally ill, and not very lucid, but when a relative asked him about his racing, he truly perked up. I was hoping to get some info to pass along to the family that might bring a smile to his face.
He has lived in the New York area all his U.S. life.
I'd rather not throw his name around, out of respect for the family, unless it turns out he had some real fame.
Thanks.
