OT: Poker Chips

The last thread I found here relating to this topic is from 2012.

Just a general comment on how various hobbies are very similar. This started as my basement was finished this year and I bought a cheap poker table, and I wanted to get a set of chips to host games.

Started from craigslist, reading reviews in Amazon, watching video reviews and eventually ended up in a poker chip forum. It is like falling into a rabbit hole.

I feels like I started looking for a used Trek and now I am dreaming of a Seven.

The poker chips forums reminds me a lot of this forum. Large communities, good information, vibrant classified sections, and active vendors participation.
Just an observation.

A forum devoted to...poker CHIPS? Not playing poker, but the chips themselves? I need to go visit.

Yep. Have not looked at the chip market recently, but some cool stuff.

I prefer vintage Bakelite poker chips generally. They are really quite beautiful and I find it amusing when I am playing quarter poker with chips that cost a dollar Also have a Count-Rite Bakelite dispenser that is pretty cool.

Been playing stud poker since a bus boy at my mom's job taught me when I was 5 years old. Started taking money from my dad's friends by age 6. LOL.

Do they obsess over how to lube the chips, or how to ensure even wear across all of them equally?

Oh yeah. Been there. Done that. Designed some custom chips for my dad since he requested. I don't think he ever uses though.

There are a few rabbit holes I try to avoid else I lose my wallet down 'em

Really love both those forums.

You joke... but:

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threa...e-right.14343/

And I am actually thinking about getting those same clay chips and perform the cleaning and the oil steps, which could take a few hours for 500 chips.

Poker chip designs are very cool. They got something timeless about them.

That said, a whole forum dedicated to them? ah, cool I guess but with bikes I guess there are a lot more subjects to be talked about (and even then we repeat topics on the daily). I wonder if they have the campy vs shimano vs sram equivalent over there

They do. I think the comparable is:

Chip materials (plastic, ceramic, cheaper clay, and casino grade clay.)

Then there are consideration on how they sound, stack, shuffle. And of course aesthetics.

And people collect multiple sets and rotate them. And the used chips market is quite huge.

PM me if you're interested but I have a couple of sets of matching poker chips (solid colors) in nice wooden cases. Had them for nearly a decade or so but haven't played poker in a long time. They are just taking up space and I'm considering letting them go honestly after seeing your post here.

Yes, as news to the uninitiated, poker chips are apparently a thing.

I don't play poker myself, so when we were examining a friend's poker chips at party a couple of years ago it was a revelation. Based on the discussion here, they must have been clay. We all agreed it was amazing how incredibly pleasant the simple act of holding them in your fingers was. The soft, raspy sound they made when dropped on a table or when rubbed together was extremely pleasant to the ear.

Clearly, poker chips have been refined over decades to be strangely seductive to enhance the pleasure of gambling. If you think an iPhone is a pleasant and addictive object to interact with, you haven't tried poker chips.

It is surprising the immediate difference in feel you get from a decent quality clay chip.

The TV Texas Holdem tournament poker has been a complete game changer. We can argue for better or worse on many fronts. Back in the old days, clay chips were harder to find and relatively considerably more expensive. Thus, plastic was the standard. Poker on TV changed that. It created a expansive Poker business.

ATMO, for any home game amongst friends with a minimum of $.25/$.50 bets, chips are not needed and more of a hassle than they are worth. With a $20 buy in: 20 quarters, 10 ones and a five spot for each person works great. People just make change from the pot as the game progresses. No need for people to cash out. Just take the cash in front of you and leave.
