White Industries Hub Question

White Industries CLD Hubset offers a free upgrade to 48 points of engagement (POE) freehub option. Is there any reason why you would prefer the standard 24? I would be using the wheelset on a gravel endurance bike, not a mountain bike or crit bike, so a little lag is not a huge deal, but still, faster engagement is better, right?

Would the 48 be louder, more drag, less durable, etc..?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts. I am a little out of my comfort zone trying to figure this all out.

I have the WI CLD with 48 point. Just as quiet as my other Shimano CX75 hubs with 18 pt and the quicker engagement is noticeable between the wheelsets. I'd definitely recommend it.

Yep

I have both and the newer 48 point is certainly quieter. I feel like it has less drag but I can't prove that...

I'm a fan.

I've got XMRs with the 48 point engagement and I love them so far (using them on a couple mountain bikes).

+1 to the upgrade!

IMO, for your use (gravel endurance bike), your won't notice any improvement with a faster engagement.

Tony, does that mean that you would prefer the 24. There is no cost difference, but I am just trying to figure out if there is any reason to go with the 24 over the 48. I do agree that the quicker engagement is not a huge deal to me as it might be on a mountain bike or criterium racer

Well, I had to make the same decision when I recently ordered a T11 for my road bike. Since quicker engagement wouldn't do anything for my use, I just went with the 24.

At the time, I was concerned that the 48t might be 'louder', but based on the comments here, looks like its not.

and I knew I could upgrade to 48t later if I wanted, but I didn't see any path to downgrade to 24t from 48t

Also, I didn't like the way the pawls looked on the 48t. They just looked weaker to me.

I am definitely a little concerned that there has to be a reason to choose the 24 as that is the default and 48 is just a free option. It does look like the 24 with the single tooth might be a little more solid than the 48 with 2 small teeth, but I am way over my head here... and thus the questions.

You could tell them your intended use for their hub and see what they suggest.
