Dura Ace 9000 53/36 Chainring Question
I thinking about building up a Quark Elsa RS and as it doesn't come with chainrings I'll have to pick some up. The build will be D/A 9000- mechanical not Di2. I will be using 9000 chainrings.
Question is, if I go with 53/36 will shifting be fine? I'm assuming that's the case and I know riders in the Giro are pushing a gap > Shimano's 16t recommedation. Those bikes seem to be using Di2 though. I have 7970 and 9070 and am familiar with and love Di2. This bike will be stone-age mechanical though. Thanks. |

I have a Riken using 9000 mechanical and the shifting is fine, but I'm on 53/39 using Praxis rings.
That said, I know Praxis does make a mid-compact set: http://www.praxiscycles.com/product/compact-road-sets/ Wrt the gap in gears, hard to say until you try it, but if 52/26 works OK then I'd imagine 53/36 should too (?). However, why not just go 52/36? Do you really need a 53/11? Last edited by dhalbrook; 05-21-2015 at 04:42 PM. |

You're right on maybe not needing the 53/11 but it's nice to have for the canyons and fast rides around here. Since I have to order rings anyway I think I'm leaning to the 53/36.

I have a bike with Ultegra di2 with 53/36 rings (11S). Works great. Cheers.
