28mm road tires?
Did a search, and thought an updated thread might help. For my use I find the Conti 4000s to be a good compromise beween durability and performance.
How do current 28mm road offerings measure up to the Conti? I'm trying to decide whether to have a custom built with 28mm clearance or not, and plan to use 23mm rims. |

I too have had good luck with those Schwalbe's but in the 25c size.

I've been using the 28 mm Conti's on my bike for some time now and like them very much.
They have an unusual profile FWIW.........they are about 26 mm wide but taller than the same tire in a 25 mm. So you have more air volume without much more width. I've had very good luck with them and use them on crap roads and dirt/gravel all the time and so far have not flatted one. dave |

Any comments on 28s during hard climbing? Running 25c 4000s on my Duende, I seem to notice a slight bit of the suspension effect when standing on the pedals. Which is fine of course, but I don't want to cross over into sloppiness.

You may be over thinking this a bit. Bounce can be adjusted to some extent by playing with air pressure.
FWIW, even on a lightweight rig, I'm going to be rolling down the road at 220+lbs. At my size, 28's make a lot of sense. Typically, with Conti 4 Season 28's, I will run 95-100psi in rear and 85-90psi up front. On my everyday urban commuter, I run 32's. Just recently, I put some 60mm Schwalbe Big Apples on my Karate Monkey winter rig. Spent the afternoon on that thing, running around a Kentucky farm while my daughters were taking some riding lessons. After a bit of fiddling, ended up with 20psi up front and 25 out back for bouncing across rutted pastures. I wasn't very graceful, but you could not wipe the smile off of face. Large tires sure make life a little smoother. |
