Anyone know this bit of Armstrong Tour lore?
Saw this quote in today's Inner Ring blogpost and was curious about the backstory. Anyone know about this incident? Sounds like a good tale...
" Lance Armstrong famously got the team car to call Dr Ferrari mid-way through an Alpine stage of the Tour de France for advice. " |

That was in the book "Lance Armstrong's War" by Daniel Coyle. It was during the 2000 when Pantana did his suicide breakaway to Morzine.

Is this it? p. 114 from Lance Armstrong's War, "... During Marco Pantani's breakaway in the 2000 Tour, a concerned Armstrong had Bruyneel call Ferrari from the team car to get his opinion on whether Pantani could keep this pace going (he couldn't, Ferrari predicted, rightly)."

And here I thought he was asking for recommendation on a good place to get a cappucino....
Serves me right for speculating. |

And people wonder about the half a million a year consulting fee. That type of advice is not cheap...

I believe that there have been at least three different editions, each with a different "Afterward" chapter. If what's left of my memory still serves me, the first edition covered the remainder of the 2004 season and Tyler Hamilton's doping positive. The second edition covered Armstrong's 2005 TdF, and the third edition added discussion about Landis and Armstrong's 2009 comeback.
