thanks, all - I think I'll go with the 1up single I linked as it sounds like it's a great option. and a nice bonus with the ability to add on additional trays as needed.

For last 10 years I use this type with 1/2 the loops and one top tube piece removed for one bike use. Although last few years since mini van back in life just put inside. I use the rack to keep bike when very dirty outside, and hose off while on rack after winter and wet woods rides etc...

I also replaced 3x steel square tubes with some 6000 series Alloy I bought for 23.00 and cut and drilled etc.

Set up for one bike it is 16 lb. I really like it a lot FWIW. Take it off and toss inside so no worry about bits missing off it when you get back to car/van/truck.
