I'm being told these cleats work with X series speedplays

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V4S5TTG...23860_70668520

Says so in the description and two people have told me they work. I can't believe that, looking at them
Anyone tried these?

Those look like aftermarket Zero's to me. So no, I don't think those would be compatible with X.

That's my thought, but I asked and got two people swearing they work. I don't see how...

Nope, not compatible with the X series pedals as the mechanism is different.

However, I have heard rumors that the metal outer plate (which is often what wears out most quickly) is interchangeable — maybe that’s what the other people are referring to

I don't know if multiple sellers indicates multiple manufacturers (probably not) but I bought a pair a few years ago solely to swap that outermost aluminum plate.

My goal was to rehab a friend's worn X-type pedals with plate and screws and they were not an exact shape/fit. They did work with a bit of filing here and there.

Definitely did not try to use the Zero cleat engagement parts on the Xs though.

That seems sketchy but I suppose it's worth a try if you have Xs and can't get replacement cleats.

That alone might be worth it. THat's the part that goes first for me.

A set of Keepon Kovers will protect the outer plate of X series cleats and keep them like new.

I've seen those on eBay. Stated as being for X. Most definitely not. Pictures showed them upside down on the wrong shoe.

As a non-Speedplay rider who has a set of unknown model in a drawer, can someone show me side-by-side pictures of Zero and X pedals and paraphernalia?

A while back a forum member put together a group purchase of speedplay x springs. If you have x cleats the only that wears out is the springs. Calvin Ng, corkycalvin he has some left I think.

I got those, but it is actually the screws and faceplay that wear first for me. Covers help a lot. In all the years of having X's, only once has a spring failed

The faceplate may work. Thought you were looking for the base plate or springs.

The Zero cleats look like the OP's photo, whereas here are the X Series cleats:

Tip-offs: Zero cleats have a pair of set screw rotation limit adjuster screws on one of the cleat, whrease X Series cleats have no adjustment screws at all; Zero cleats have a a single, flat horshoe shaped spring with tabs at the front an rear for engaging the pedals, whereas X Series have two separate springs made from round spring wire, and the portion of the spring that engages the cleat is a straight bar.

The zero cleat has play adjusting screw on the side. It is part of the assembly that attaches to the shoe. The metal faceplate which looks similar to the x cleat attaches to cleat with its centering hole. The look interchangeable.
