The serial number of the onyx/emerald bike is 3700 and the samurai orange bike is 3355.
As for lugs - the orange frame has a full lower head lug. Both the upper head and seat lugs are half lug/half fillet.
The onyx/emerald frame is all half lug/half fillet.
Both have the full BB shell.
I never truly understood the mixed construction methods but in talking to owner of my LBS, which was a big Serotta dealer back in the day, it seems like they used what was on hand when the order came in.

My impression is that in the early days of shaped or odd diameter tubing lugs weren't available to fit the tubes. Later Serotta evidently had lugs made to fit all ends of the Colorado tubeset. I assume that was mainly to speed the construction of the frames.

From what you describe it does sound like there was no clear cutoff point between the fillet brazed and lugged CIIs. Size of the frame and geometry may play a part in the story.

This forum has become a great resource and has led to my affinity toward Serotta frames!

1. Colorado II, 57cm so quite big for me, but thought I could make it work with 650x38b. It did, but I never got to build it up. The "S" on the BB, fork and brake bridge drew me in. No longer own.
2. 2001ish? Colorado III 56cm, still big, but I was able to get riding on it. Robbed the parts for the Colorado Legend CRL build. Rafters decoration.
3. 90's T-Max in my size, that took way too long to build, but is my errand bike/Commuter.
4. ~1993 53cm Colorado Legend CRL - from geo charts 53.5TT, that was too small for the seller. We were able to swap frames (he took the Colorado II). Love this bike, would love to swap it for a CSI with steel fork in a 54cm. This one is currently getting a facelift - hopefully full nitto finishing kit and back to threaded headset/quill stem.
5. ~late 90's 54cm Rapid Tour with head tube extension. Shipped to me as a flatbar commuter. Surprised to find out it had 410mm chain stays, so the front will fit a 32c with mid reach brakes, however the rear fits a max of 25c prior to touching the seat tube! If anyone has a suggestion on how to get a 32c in there, please let me know! Fun to ride, wish it could take a 32c. Collecting dust.
6. ~2001ish "54" custom Legend Ti. Seller stated that the TT was 55cm with a headtube extension (effective 54cm TT). I purchased at risk of a less than ideal fit. This one has become my favorite. Fits 28c (barely), 1-1/8" Reynolds fork. I plan on keeping this one as long as I can - it just feels right (and lightest in my fleet).

Hey! Is everyone over here talking about Serottas...?!

1991 or 1992 Davis Phinney, with a partial custom paint--thus the lack of "Davis Phinney" script on the TT. Got it new from Morgul Bismark in Boulder when I raced for them.

1992 T-max I've resto-modded into a SS machine with a new paintjob that is the same as the original Morgul Bismark team livery it had.

I'm partial to the brushed/black Ottrott. Stunning. Who refinished that?

Mine-old photo, now with eps11 and lightweights and different bars. But still the bike in the quiver that gets reached for first:

That was the original factory finish. I liked that it didn’t have any logos on the downtube or seat tube. I ended up sending it back to the factory to be refinished—it’s actually the same frame in the photo in white/brushed with SR11 and the Lightweights.

The Legend with the 3/4 paint job is either the third or second last Legend thst Serotta made before closing doors for good as Serotta (the factory briefly reopend as Saratoga Framewoorks.

The Legend singlespeed originally belonged to Scott Hock. He referred to it as his “blinglespeed”—I kicked it up a notch.

As much as I like the white Ottrott (mine was finished nearly identically), this one's my favorite. When I commission a custom it will have paint inspired by this design. Simple and elegant.
