Crankset recommendation needed, road triple 46ish - 36ish -24ish for my wife
What's out there for 46(48) - 36ish - 24(26) road Q-factor 10/11 compatible triples ?
Piecing something together isn't working out (Re-gearing Campy Racing T, finding a Ritchey Logic, etc) and wide Q MTB cranks are out. Rene Herse $$$$$ TA $$$$ Sugino XD not 10 compatible Sugino Alpina 2 promising, but stamped rings and no specs to be had IRD Defiant precious little info online, maybe it's discontinued? V-O Grand Cru 160mm Q seems a bit excessive IMO. anything I'm missing? Last edited by donevwil; 09-13-2019 at 02:51 PM. |

I run vintage Sugino AT triples with TA ramped and pinned rings for outer and middle rings (110/74 BCD), 48-36-24, on Phil Wood BBs.

Why isn't the Sugino XD 10spd compatible?
What length crank are you looking for? I've got some spare 110/74 triple cranks in 172.5mm, including Ritchey Logic, T.A. Alize, and even a set of American Classic cranks. |

My wife rides 175, but 172.5 may be in the cards. I especially love Ritchey Logic triples. |

I took off a triple (50/36/24 Suntour Superbe) on my touring bike and I use a double instead. 42/28 SRAM XX crank with the narrow Q factor. I have the option to go with an 11-42 cog set in the rear with a Road Link.

Get the Herse. Mine's 24-34-46.
Really rocks with the SRAM PG1070 12-32 cassette. |

if you can find one, i would not hesitate to go with the IRD crank. While i dont have the triple, i have the subcompact on my Gunnar. Nice quality. No issues.

Keep in mind that you can usually slash a bit of the Q off by using a asymmetric bottom bracket. Back in the day, a lot of spindles were longer on the drive side than the NDS. This way, the NDS arm is closer to the bike than the DS arm, oftentimes there's no good reason not to do this. It sounds like it would be weird and lopsided, but doesn't feel weird to pedal. Some old bikes had over a centimeter of difference between the two sides, nobody minded.
My 70s Fuji has a 142mm q-factor triple this way. It's glorious. Modern cartridges are usually symmetric, but there are still games that can be played. Start with a BB that has an unflanged NDS cup like something from Velo Orange or IRD, and just throw a spacer on the drive side to offset the BB within the shell. I recently made such a modification to my gravel bike. After I switched from a 7-speed cassette to 8-speed, the chain was rubbing the tire in the small-big. I actually swapped the BB out to a narrower spindle, but threw in a big spacer... shoved the chainline outboard and gave me a slightly narrower q-factor at the same time. |

FWIW, I use a Campy MTB crank with the original chainrings - so all 7/8 speed - with a Campy 10 drivetrain and it all works excellent IMO.

You can find Sugino information on their website. The XD is 9 or 10 speed.

Hmmm. Not sure. I looked up XD and saw the XD 600 was should as the 7 or 8 speed. I did further research because I am a Sugino fan and found they make the Aplina2 triple which handles 10 speed. Soma sells them. https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/pro...9?category=760 Editing. I just your original post about the Alpina2 being a no go. Sorry about that. |

Now that is nice road bike gearing! I've been running a 46-34-24 for about 15 years on my Mercian Audax. This is a TA Zepher.
