OT: servicing a rolex
If you own a Rolex, where do you send it for service?

I can no longer do them. Sorry
They are some of the simplest of watches to do, and I would look local first. Ken does a good job and is my buddy. http://www.abouttimewatches.com/index.html |

Rolex Service
So there is the right answer and the right answer.
Not sure what service, but a typical Rolex cleaning, adjustment... generally includes a new crystal and o-rings/seals and pressure test so it can be $1000. If you get it done by a watchmaker, not Rolex Service Center, it can be done for much less since a crystal replacement is really not always needed. Probably half or less. A good watchmaker will follow the Rolex procedures and use Rolex parts so it’s not much risk. There are a bunch of good watch sites (Watchuseek) is the one I use and you can probably find a good person to handle the service. I know a good guy in Houston, Hal Martin, he can take care of you. He sells a lot of high end watches. Ray |

depends.
how old is the watch and what kind is it? RSC will not service watches over a certain age, so you must go to non OEM service if it's an antique. i'm in the camp of dont touch it if it's running well. the only think i have done regularly to my expensive autos, including rolex is a pressure test every couple years, since my watches often go underwater. i own a lot of auto dive watches...

Don't know where you live, but if you're OK with mailing it to the West Coast some of the best out there are located in LA and Seattle.
Nesbit's LA Watchworks ABC Watchwerks I've sent a few vintage Omegas and Heuers to Nesbits and can vouch for their expertise. Also refer to this post at TRF https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=575802 Good luck. |

I had service performed at the Mother Ship in NYC. $800 all in, but great communication and the piece looks like new. Rolex recommends service every five years, mine went more than seven.

The dealer told me to let him know when my 5 year warranty is almost up on my 2 year old explorer and he would get it serviced under warranty. Banking on that but not sure how 'ethical' it is.

It can be sent to Rolex in NYC or serviced by an authorized Rolex jeweler. When my Submariner (built in 1991) stopped working a couple of years ago I had it serviced (new springs, lube, crystal, bezel) by the guy at Rolex in the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. I didn't want to deal with shipping it to NYC. Cost was right around $1,000.
I probably could have dealt with someone closer, but that was easier. Long story, but there you go. I got it back as good as new. |

Mine went ~15 years without service before it stopped working and needed service. I wasn't wearing it consistently during that time though.

I've found that the interval between service is much greater when the watch is sent to the actual Rolex factory for adjustment, instead of going to Mayors' service center (who are an authorized repair center). The only cost difference is the $80 for shipping, and it might take a month or two longer, but it doesn't go out of adjustment every two years. And fwiw, it's a $800 service.

Wow, I had no idea, you're out $800 every few years for the privilege of wearing a Rolex? You learn something new everyday...

I second Jack Alexyon; he has a backlog but his work is first class and reasonable.
