Retro modern bikes.

So,
I picked up Slim Chance frameset. Thinking of going all modern for components. Likely Ultegra 6800 and deeper carbon wheels.
What are peoples thoughts on these builds?
I like the steel frame look with carbon wheels and the ride and performance of newer components and wheels. Nostalga isnt really in the cards for this as it was originally built with 6500 Ultegra. I dont mind swapping that stuff out as long as it will get ridden and used.
Anyone have any input of something like this?

I say go for it. 6800 is a tough group to beat at the performance per dollar ratio and I'm sure it'll look good on a round tubed steel bike.

I thought for years I'd put deep carbon wheels on my Tommasini, never ended up happening. I did run my Enve 25s on it and have run my Campy Bullet 50s on my Koga MAX bike.

I love the look. There was a Sachs here somewhere w deep carbon wheels that blew my mind. Also jt’s^ is BA IMO. I say why not blend the two and enjoy the historic frame qualities and modern shiftiness.

I concur, in favor. The suppleness of a lugged frameset with tight quick shifting modern components and stiff, fast wheels is a great combination. Ime, of course, ymmv.

I much prefer the look of my Merckx with my 8 speed record group, but I much prefer the ride and functionality you get with a new group. I was worried black / carbon with this frame would detract from the aesthetic but I actually like it a lot now...

I am a big advocate and author of retro rockets, however I do have one aspect I do not like in the smallest sense and that is the use of modern thread less dog bone stems on lugged and small bone tubed frames.

They may be functional and efficient for bar changes however I say they look terrible and destroy the “look” and won't do it except to tune a fit.

Like the Sachs above, beautiful bike but that "turd log" sitting on the head tube just extinguishes the aesthetic, she ant got the "look"!

The Kalloy stem isn't bad if you have to have 31.8 bars. Super light, too.

Yes I have 1 on my Master X Lite now, its looks good but I would like to find something better.

I have tried most everything from the narrow tube Deda Superleggera to the Extralight, even hand mirror polished Al stems trying to get the finish and "look" correct and they all just don't cut it with a lugged, small tubed frame. Ugly!

Got to agree on this. I feel like if you're going to embrace the whole neo-retro thing, than quill stems are part of the package. Otherwise threadless stems on adapters just look out of place on a small tubed racing bike from the 80s or 90s.

Why do you need 31.8 bars? They're only that wide to make it safe to use carbon, which is rarely much lighter than alloy bars.

Here’s my fleet of neo-retro Ibis (Ibii?). The blue Hakkalugi is Red 1x10 44-11/42, the orange Spanky is eTap, and the green Hakkalugi is Rival 1x10 (since sold). The Spanky is the best road bike I’ve ever ridden, period. Silky smooth, super responsive, glides effortlessly.

That's an awesome collection! I love American steel from that time period. Your Spanky sounds like my Ritchey Road Logic from 1995/96. Love that orange!
