If you want something that will last get the omega

Get an A. Lange & Sohn instead, 1815 up/down.

Just kidding, get the Omega.

If you want something a bit more interesting, look at Nomos. I'm not a huge fan of their minimalist design aesthetic, but their Club watch is pretty nice. What they're doing is interesting -- independent company, actually working on the mechanical parts of the watch. One of their watches now contains an escapement they designed/manufactured themselves. That is not a common thing (many watches source the mechanics from other companies), and I wouldn't be surprised if their watches become more valuable over time.

I've had a T-Touch for over 10 years now. I love it. Had it serviced once. Omegas are beautiful watches for sure. I appreciate the quality/relative affordability of the Tissot. In fact, I'm thinking of getting a T-Touch classic for the dressier stuff to replace my Tag. I think I'm over automatic watches for now.

Having said all that, the Seamaster is a watch you can pass down to your son or son-in-law.

Is this close enough?

Omega Seamaster. Stainless Quartz if money is an issue. I'm partial to the Titanium Automatic Chronometer. I should just sell my other watches as I wear it every day.

A Seamaster if you like the looks, but please not a quartz. Watches are very personal so don't be overly influenced by others. I bought a Seamaster once and ended up giving it away as I did not enjoy wearing it.

Nomos is way too small for my tastes. A. Lange & Sohne is an interesting brand. They look great in photos, but I do not like them as well in person. If I was buying a Lange it would be the Grande Lange 1. At the price it is not pertinent to this discussion.

For a tough cycling watch:

Watches, like bikes, are a personal decision. Buy the one that you like. The one that you look forward to putting on.

I would agree with the Seamaster crowd. I wear a PO, and a SPM mostly, as I have a few watches.

Good luck and enjoy!

Yep, beautiful watch. I hadn't found them very interesting, then a month ago, I just started liking the 1815 for some reason. Price is a problem, sadly.

depends on what "speaks to you" when you think of buying any watch.

the tissot t-touch is a very nice watch, well made, but it's a more technologically current device being quartz and multi-function.

whereas the omega seamaster, while also being a very nice watch, is a very different niche -- more traditional and anachronistic, if you go with an automatic that just tells time and date.

if you want a feature-laden techno watch then t-touch.
if you want a more traditional mechano watch then seamaster.

another factor to consider: they are also in very different price-brackets, even a well worn pre-owned seamaster will approach $1K.

i'm partial to the vintage mechano side of things myself:

the reality is that any decent watch will tell time as well as a $20 timex. buy the one that speaks to you. IMO, the tissot and omega are two very different watches and pretty different pricepoints. the good news is watch shopping can be good fun, treat yourself to an outing someplace like NYC and try on a bunch, and buy the one that screams "pick me!"

Well its time to get a big boy watch and the Suunto has 24 months in Iraq and lasted me 10 years with new bands and batteries of course. I like the T-touch because its like a grown up version of the Suunto but I also like the simplicity and look of the Omega. I would really like to find a quality Omega Military watch but they are are to find in good condition and under 1K

if you can afford it, and you're a one-watch kind of guy, dont be afraid to spend some very real coin on a good watch. something like the Omega can and will be around for more than a generation, so the value/time proposition is not too bad.

How many Omega Seamaster models are there? I gather that the OP is thinking about athletic/military/diver watches. I have a late 1960s/early 1970s Omega Seamaster DeVille that is a "waterproof" dress-style date self-wind so "Seamaster? may refer to many water-proof Omegas?

to many to count or list. The dress watches of the 60-70s have little in common with the pro style watches, or the PO type.

Omega has used the name Seamaster on a LOT of different watches over the years.

True - I think there are a ton of them. The Planet Ocean is also considered a Seamaster all the way back to the '70s I think.

I had this one. Great watch, except the bezel wasn't useful when diving:

I have an Omega Seamaster (model above) and there are a few comments I have:

-I love the way it looks and feels
-it gets comments often
-it is expensive as hell to get regular service by Omega ($500)...that is after spending $2000+ plus on the watch. Service is recommended every 3 years and you will not have your watch for 4-8 weeks.
-My Omega has been in need of service for the last 2 years, but it hasn't been worth spending the $500 on Omega service, so it has just been sitting...spend $500 to get use of $2,000 watch, or just let $2,000 watch sit until I care enough...not enjoyable options.

My thoughts: I like the idea of a mechanical watch, sort of like I like the idea of a garden. It is cool, until you have to tend to your watch. I wear other watches and often put mine down for a few days, then I have to reset the time. I don't want to work for the watch, it should work for me.

So, my thoughts: When you get a mechanical watch like the Omega, it is more than a tool. It is equipment which you will have to tend to and pay to maintain. If you are cool with this, then go for it. Me, I want my watch to help me, be a tool for me... if I were to go mechanical again, it would be simpler, I really like this watch: http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX007K-Divers-Automatic-Watch/dp/B000B5MI3Q

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519W1AtRunL._SL246_SX190_CR0,0,190,246_.jpg

It is a classic, good looking, reasonably priced ($170 on Amazon), athletic, and if it breaks you won't be extremely bothered.

Just a few thoughts.

That Porsche Design watch and a Mark II are at the top of my list.

The Seikos are great. They are fun to mod and change around from time to time. My current is an SKX171 with a 007 bezel and super oyster bracelet. It wears across most settings, and as I only have about $300 in it, there's no tragedy if it dies. I agree with the statements above about the cost of ownership. I have a $2500 Tag that is about $300 to service. It's 20 years old and smaller than what's in fashion now so it gets no wear anymore. It was a gift so it's hard to part with, but it's a little sad that a watch with that price tag has run it's course.

Thanks for that video. I just had my 1977 "Date" rebuilt. The jeweler replaced the crown, main spring, crystal, and a few other items and polished the the bracelet and watch body. It looks and runs like new after barely running at all.
My wife bought the watch for my 26th birthday in 1977. In 1977, the gold and stainless watch cost $700. It cost $950 total for the rebuilt but for me it was well worth it.:)

+1

I've owned two omegas, a Seamaster GMT and a Speedmaster Pro. Sold the seamaster before it needed service and sold the speedmaster after its mainspring broke. Both watches held value well. The speedmaster was bought second hand for $1300 in like new condition. I owned it nearly 10 years with the last year sitting because of the broken mainspring ($600+ to overhaul a chrono), sold broken for $1050. Nice watches but I wear a seiko automatic now....
