Crankset Question re: Specialized Roubaix SL Frameset

I have a 2009 Specialized Roubaix SL frameset and I'm wondering what type of BB/crank I can use in it. I'm currently running a Shimano FC-R700 compact crank on it with a Shimano outboard BB. I'd like to pick up a carbon crankset for it, specifically a Specialized one, but im not sure what I need. Most of them I see are BB30 or BB30 compatible. My frame is not a BB30 frame, it is a threaded BB shell. I admittedly know zip about BB30 having never owned a frame that used that BB type. This is a link to my frameset, if that helps.

http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...1&menuItemId=0

Can someone tell me what I can and can't use with this frameset?

Thanks!

Tom

I think you would be better served with a Campagnolo carbon crank rather than a Specialized one, if they make one for 24mm/outboard BBs(which I don't think they do). Centaur or Chorus(yes 11s will work fine) are very nice.

if its a threaded BB, you need a traditional BB, that's really all there is to know. you cant use any of the newer standards, like BB30.

FSA MEGA, SRAM GXP or Campy UT/PT will all work just fine.

if you want carbon, SRAM Force is generally a great value, i've got one on my cross bike, and it's great.

The Specialized crankset (S-Works carbon) fits only BB30 or PF30 frames. This will not fit your Specialized frame if you have a BSA threaded BB shell.

change out the outboard bearings

to FSA and use an FSA carbon crankset. Or Campy with Camy bearings.

But BB30 cranks need BB30-purpose-built framesets.

I've got a '10 model Roubaix. Pretty much anything with an English threaded BB will work.

Its got Red on it now, but has had 7700 D/A on it before.

The reason I ask...

Is that I've yet to see a Specialized S-Works crankset that wasn't for BB30. Yet the 2009 Roubaix models with the SL frameset clearly came with S-Works cranks. Anyone know where I can find one? I've been watching the forums and the 'bay with zero luck...

think it goes like this

that year S-Works Roubaix came as a "module" model that included bb30 and their carbon crankset.

I believe the stand alone S-Works frameset came with threaded bb.

and then all other models of the Roubaix had threaded bb.

it is confusing, but this might help:

Hmm, the frameset still says it's an oversized BB. And the pic looks that way too.

tlarwa, did the previous owner have an adapter pressed in that you can press out?

maybe we are confusing models and names here

SL, SL2, S-Works. The OP said he had an SL frameset, not an S-Works.

It's the SL "Team" version with the Quick Step decal on the down tube. Not an S-Works. I have no idea if it's a pressed in threaded adaptor or not. It's definitely the frame sold as a frameset on the website for that year, though.

I believe that is the Pro model

and pretty sure it only came with threaded bb.

I have a 2009 S-Works Roubaix (SL2) that I purchased as a module, and it has the BB30 compatible BB. The Team model came threaded as I remember.

I also have an S-Works Tarmac (SL3) with the BB30 compatible BB. To improve the shifting, I put Shimano rings on it.

My recommendation for upgrading is to install the newer Ultegra crank (or DA 7900). Nothing out there shifts as well and they are stiff as ah-get-out. The extra weight they carry is meaningless.

I have Ultegra rings on my S-Works crank too.

I just read over this description: http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...Id=0&gold_ses=

Quote:
The Roubaix Pro SL C2 Dura-Ace is made with FACT 9r carbon using our new FACT IS construction; with an oversized threaded BB and speed-oriented design, this frame is all about minimal weight and all-day-comfortable speed.
Oversized threaded? I didn't know there was such a thing, but they state an S-Works crank in the description and show it on the actual pic?

makes me think

the website is lacking some information. maybe more models came both ways; either threaded or bb30. almost for sure that crank is bb30.

my 2009 S-Works Roubaix is bb30 and i run Wheels delrin adapters with Shimano hollowtech triple cranks.
