Atak - vintage mtb hubs?
Just curious if anyone knows these? I just bought this wheelset on ebay. I haven't been able to dig up much info about these hubs, branded Atak. I saw a snippet somewhere implying they were made in the USA. Anyone know? Were they one of those boutique american made cnc'd mtb components brands?
Regardless they came and look and feel pretty nice. They're laced to some nice high polish Campy Sthenos rims with DT spokes and gold nipples. Will go nicely on the 91 Stumpjumper I'm slowly piecing together. destined for: |

They were made in the US cnc hubs but they had a odd feature, they did not come with a freehub body. The rear came without a freehub body on it and you had to get a Shimano XT or XTR freehub body and install it yourself. So the rear was this weird hybrid of cnc hubshell with cartridge bearings and a Shimano freehub body with cup and cone bearings.
Based on what I can see from your pictures the front hub needs the bearing pressed back in as it is pushed out slightly.

I looked for the hubs in a few catalogs going back to 1993, but couldn't find them.
I found the rims in the 1992 Campagnolo catalog. That was the first year for Sthenos. 22mm wide, 405g. |

pretty sweet in 91 is sweet enough for me.
The project is moving along pretty slow but I'll post pics when it's eventually finished. I'm slowly grabbing bits of neon anodized 90s mtb goodness. |
