It's a changing...

Wouldn't say avoid it like the plague, but unless you have reason to go there, not much to do/see. As with any large city, street smarts are good to have when walking around.

Good place to go if you're looking for drugs, ho action, nutty street people, or excellent and cheap Vietnamese food. Otherwise stay away.

Walk through to witness crack cocaine being smoked as casually as you would eat an ice cream cone.

Tenderloin isnt particularly dangerous to "outsiders." The crime there is entrenched to the locals.

Believe it or not, they have some good restaurants around tenderloin. I used to work in Post and Larkin. They have some good Authentic Vietnamese and some other Asians Restaurants.

i think there is also good cheap Turkish food. Check out the map i sent you.

there might be the occasional stray bullet flying, but since it's in the main part of the city it might not be tooo bad...for the adventurous it showcases the craziest of the crazies.

better to stay clear of Bayview/Hunter's Point (aka Gun Point)...

A lot of violent crime occurs @ Bayview/Hunters Pt area
Tenderloin not considered dangerous by locals
Expect to see some homeless, etc., but also has some really good northern Indian food
Do not have to circumnavigate around it

In the TL a lot of crazy S happens, but it's usually directed inwardly or at other crazy peeps.

I've been going through it for decades and have eaten at every single place in it, all at least good, mostly delicious.

I did step over a dead body once.

And periodically dealers come in from other areas to sell and there are mini turf wars. A few months ago a German tourist was killed in a cross-fire.

Mostly ok.

Dear Welshman, with taste buds born in Wales, two words:

Vietnamese Food. You will have died and gone to heaven. Or hell, if you choose to look at it like that.

street smarts is important

Like any big city, you need to have some amount of street smarts. if you look like an easy target, stay away from dangerous areas.

The Mission and Tenderloin are frequented by lots of people from lots of places, but there are certain times of the night where you will need to be a little more vigilant.

If you are comfortable in a big city, I would not avoid the Tenderloin. It is part of the fabric of SF.

If you do, then you did not see some of the real part of San Francisco.

I would rather go to Tenderloin than see Embarcadero.

If it's nice rent a cheap bike and ride the Embarcadero to the GG Bridge, for sure.
Sausalito or the Headlands if so inclined.

What about the farmers market at the Ferry Building? I think that's well worth the trip.
