Quill To Threadless Stem Adapter

I'm considering going with a quill to threadless adapter on my new build, paired with a Velo Orange tall stack quill stem.

I remember finding some very good looking examples of bikes with threadless to quill stem adapters that looked relatively normal, but the links are eluding me at the moment.

What I'm trying to avoid is this goose neck type look here:

Is it just a matter of using the Nitto or Profile quill stem adapter?

Does anyone have any experience or pictures of other good looking threadless to quill stem adaptered bikes?

I assume you're going from 1" quill to 1 1/8" stem. Here's the Profile. If you chamfer a spacer to fit the short taper, it will provide a more seamless transition down to the top nut. The flatter the top nut the better. A Shimano 105 hex top nut has a flat surface on top that's just about 1 1/8" diameter, so the shim will fit the top of it pretty well. A Stronglight on the other hand, has almost no flat surface on top. You can use a different brand of top nut than the headset, in general.

this may be what you need - BBB Bike Bicycle Fork Tube Extender

this model of this part is super hard to find on the net in the US. I got one from these guys and it took about 3 days...faster than most US vendors.

this is the only one i have ever seen where the transition is completely smooth from headset to stem. they make two models. one that fits into one inch headtube and the other that fits into 1.125 headtubes. your 1 inch steerer stem goes on over their spacers. their spacers are used to adjust how high the extension rises out of the headtube. if you have a 1.125 threadless stem you can use a normal 1 to 1.125 shim between their spacers and your stem steerer clamp.

the one i bought may be available for sale in the next few days. not because it did not work as intended, but i may go to a very tall quill instead.

the install instructions for this part:

Shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send you some photos of my Serotta. Uses the Profile threadless converter that Oliver posted. It'll at least give you some perspective of what it looks like on the bike.

I think it looks great and works well. But that's just my two cents.

Sounds like the OP wants to go from threadless to quill, so he can use a quill stem on a threadless steerer, not the other way around.

I've never heard of such a device, but I suppose it is possible, however unlikely.

Should have clarified, but this is not what I want.

I would like to go from 1in threaded to 1 1/8th threadless.

So you want to use this stem?

If by "goose neck" you mean avoiding the skinny bit between the top of the headset and the stem, I suppose you could just take the 1 1/8" Profile adapter and substitute a longer quill bolt, which should make it long enough to put on top of the Velo stem. Then you can get them low enough that the headset lockring (which is about 1.25") will nearly but up against the bottom of the Velo stem, which is also about 1.25" in outer diameter.

Is that right?

photo of installed bbb extender

one inch threaded fork
one inch bbb extender
1.125 threadless stem - with 1 inch to 1.125 shim installed

would be even a bit smoother with old world 1 inch threadless stem.

shimmed stem slides over bbb-provided spacers.

You need to open up permissions to that picasa folder for us to be able to view it.

I know it's not what the OP wants, but such a device does exist:

Draw your own conclusions on the usefulness of such a device...

Still can't see it. The above is what happens when you drop the link into the Image display function.

I can see other folders. Brooks, Cronos, Tiggy tiggy. If it is in one of those folders, let me know which one and I'll post it.
