WTB: Steel F/F that can take fenders

Hi ,

I am looking for a high end steel road (or cyclocross) frame and fork that can take fenders and is built for 57 reach brakes. Something with slightly longer chainstays and room for about 25-28 tires and fenders. Not looking for a touring bike, more a road bike like a Hampsten Crema or IF Club Racer. Looking for a bike around 57cm square. And I'm looking for one in good to mint condition. Depending on condition, my max budget is around $1500.

Update: I haven't found anything yet, so it's obviously time to lower my standards. I will also consider a cyclocross bike as long as it's got fender eyelets. Or a more mid-range road bike like a gunnar.

You can get a bike made to your requirements for your budget, or not too much more. I did.

Yes, I have priced out a few options, but I wanted to see if there was anything else available for a little less dough and a little (or a lot) less wait time.

Fitting nicely in your budget, and perhaps needs, would be a Gunnar CrossHairs. For $800, you can get the basic frame, in stock sizes and colors, and for $350 more, you can get it in any size desired. The matching crowned fork is a real beauty, and a steal for $275. With a stock size, and steel fork, there would even be some money left over for custom paint.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have a CrossHair, as my daily commuter, complete with 32mm tires, fenders, and a rack. It is my most used and versatile rig and not for sale. Neither do I have any direct connection to the financial well being of Waterford Cycles.

They also have a newer Hyper-X cyclocross rig, which accommodates disc brakes. While I like the idea of disc brakes, I'm not much of a fan for the oversize, unicrown fork needed to handle the increased fork stresses. Haven't actually had the chance to ride one, but can't imagine the extra beef doing anything positive towards ride quality. Both my 91 Paramount, and an early Serotta Nova Special X have relatively delicate forks, which can be seen to flex a bit, soaking up the chatter, on crappy roads.

I've got a Kona Kapu frame and fork from '08. I bought it new and I rode it about 500 miles total. But it's too small for me, so it's been hanging in my shop for a year or two. Here's a photo of it all built up. It's got a couple little paint chips, but otherwise in as-new condition.

Very nice frame and fork. Comes with Campy Veloce bottom bracket and Cane Creek S2 headset.
