Ottrott max tire size

One for owners of the Ottrott please. In your experience of this frameset (using a Serotta F series road fork) what is the maximum tire size? It would be helpful to me if you could name the rim/ tire combination that works on your Ottrott.

Also, what is the maximum brake reach on your machine please?

Much obliged, Sparts.

Using HED wheels with the C2 rims and tires that measure an actual 28MM, fit. It's been my experience using this combo that the brakes and their clearance to the tires, or lack thereof, is the determining factor moreso than frame and fork.

A 28? This is encouraging. I wonder if I could squeeze an FMB 27 PR tire in there?

What is the physical size of the FMB tire? The 28MM tire has maybe 2MM clearance, sides and top, on the F3 fork and about 5MM clearance all the way around at the ST wishbone and 2MM at the chainstays. If the FMB tire is any larger than 28MM, you'd run into problems with the tires picking up debris and potentially jamming.

Thanks Dave.

Not sure about the physical size;

Reassuringly they also come in 25mm which should give ample clearance, but fat 27mm would be best. I'll do some leg work and find out.

Fancy looking;

The FMB PR tires look tall. If that's true then there will be problems with the 27s not having enough room to clear the front fork. Maybe 25s then. But yeow, $250 for a pair of tires!?

Would an Ottrott be seen dead in anything less?

Sure. Mine wore Vittoria Corsa EVO CX, wonderful tires. For me, those tires are pretty much standard equipment on most all of my bikes.

Dave

Are the 28mm tires you referred to earlier the Vittoria Corsa EVO CX?

Yes. I use the 25MM tires on my HED wheels with the 23MM wide C2 rims, which allows the tires to have a measured (by me) width of 28MM.

I also run 25MM Continental GP 4000 on the same wheels and they measure an actual 27.5MM.

Many thanks Dave.

Sounds like the issue is the fork clearance, and the variability of nominal tire sizings. Did the Vittoria tires have a good puncture record for you?

Fork clearance is the biggest issue. If you're considering a tire like the FMB PR 27, you must measure them inflated on a rim to be able to judge whether or not they will be suitable.

As for flatting, I rarely get any punctures with any tire so I'm not the best one to be judging them. I will say that I absolutely hate flats and do quite a bit to prevent them, even going going as far as filling little cuts in the tires when I get home from a ride and performing routine maintenance.

All that said, I really like the Vittorias and deem them the very best clincher, all things considered, of any clincher tire in the marketplace.

Well, I got a quick and short reply from Francois Marie Boyaux (Mr. FMB himself) about the actual physical size of his Paris Roubaix tires;

"The size of Paris Roubaix 25 is 25 mm. The size of Paris Roubaix 27 is 27 mm."

Perhaps something was lost in translation.
