colnago master thoughts
Any reason why I shouldn't buy a colnago master from 2007 that I found sitting in a local(ish) shop? It has all alloy campy chorus unused, and it fits. Right now the wheels are fulcrum racing 7 but I plan on swapping those out for some hand built wheels.
It would be my main ride and race bike, and since it's all older stuff, I'd get the bike for just a touch more than the price of the frame new. Your opinions please! Anyone with experience with this bike please chime in. I only get to spend this much money once every great while so I want to make sure I do it right. . . Thanks! |

Master which model? Carbon, steel, light, xlight, etc? I can't help you but whoever can may want a little more information about the bike and you.

oh whoops, it's the steel one. It has a clover shaped top tube too. Is this enough information?

If 2007, then it must be MxL. I'm not exactly sure what kinda money you're talking about though... economy being the way it is I'm thinking I've seen some great deals pop up as there are many out there wanting to unload but holding on coz they just don't fetch as much these days (like everything else). However if you think the price is right I'd get it. Can't go wrong with steel Nags. The only thing I'd watch out is the paint scheme: certain odd ones just don't seem to sell well, ie, just in case if you want to sell it later.
Edit: I have 2 of them. Colnago Masters rank high up on the list of frames I never regretted having in my stable.

it's pretty darn close to this. . . not my first choice. There was something pretty great about the ride though.
Anyone else have experience with this frame? Thanks! |

interesting! was there anything in particular that you did not like? maybe the better question is - what is your current ideal ride like? different material altogether, fit, geometry?
thanks! |

i sure can't afford a peg right now. . . my upper limit for a complete bike is 3K and that's a stretch.

A riding buddy of mine had a MasterXLight in the late 90's. Swore by the thing. Will never be the lightest thing around, though I don't know how big a concern that is for you.

i rode this beauty for 4 seasons. Why did i sell it? wrong size, i needed something smaller. Did my first MS150 on it. This one always put me in the mood to push it. Never failed even on a recovery ride, always going as fast as i could. When you build the custom wheels just use light rims and you should be fine. if i could find a 48-49 cheap i'd have one again.

Picked mine up off Craigslist, http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=68435.
Killer deal, bike only had a couple hundred miles, full Chorus with Shamal wheels. Since the photo, I've changed the saddle to a white Selle Italia Flite Gel Flow with white bar tape. Absolutely love the ride. Got the bike for $1200. |

MXL Owner 6 months
Built mine up as a training and long distance bike. It is a 59cm older stock model, do not think it is the reproduction from the recent years.
Full Athena 11 gruppo, because the price was right, and I can swap the rear wheel to my race bike if sorely needed. Found a killer buy here of Chorus hubs built to Ambrosio Excellence rims painted in the MXL blue, to match that bit of my frame perfectly. The only thing left is a soon to be purchased Brooks Swift or Swallow to keep it spritely but provide a bit of comfort over the longer efforts. I just completed Pelotonia 2010 plue 260 miles of bike travel to get to/from the ride in Columbus Ohio, and oddly enough, cracked my 2nd Specialized Toupe saddle . . . don't think I will be buying their product anymore. And for reference I am 6'3" 170 lbs. I have even raced my MXL in a few crits, and hill challenges while my race bike was not available, and it did well enough. Regular riding/training on it is great though as the steel draws out all of the ugliness in one's pedal stroke. It will make you faster when you begin noticing and correcting the inefficient power transfer. Good luck picking that one up! |
