My least favorite type of question: Drivetrain Compatibility
Will an FSA Pro Road S10 outer chainring play nicely on a DA 9-spd crank with a Shimano 9-spd chain?
I've found the following on FSA chainrings: >> S10 is compatible with Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo Ultra Narrow 10-Speed >> S9/C10 is compatible with Shimano 9 speed and Campagnolo C10 10-Speed The chainring I've located is labeled as "S10" so I'm wondering if it will work in an "everything else Shimano 9-spd" config. TIA Louis (Or: Do you have an extra 9-spd 130mm BCD 48T outer chainring?) |

technically speaking... yeah it will. when i was still working in a bike shop, i was asked to install 10s chainrings on 9 speed setups (CT2 on an older crank) by the owner himself! it shifted properly while on the bike stand, and i imagine in practice too if he were using it...
how optimal it is... i have no clue, but from a purely technical standpoint it should be fine. |

Yes, use the one labeled S10, it will work fine with a 9s chain. BTW-I have a Record 10s crank and rings and use an 8s chain on my friction 7s setups, they work fine. |

Don't lose any sleep over crank compatability. I'm currently running a 6/7 speed crank with 10 speed Ultegra. Never missed a shift or dropped the chain yet.
