"With police zeroing in on him, the key suspect in a hit-and-run accident that left a bicyclist brain dead took his own life early Tuesday"

Difficult to call it . . .

Should I feel sorry for the driver? Not sure.

As usual with these stories, there's so much left between the lines to read. The driver was seen at a party--infers he had been drinking, but that's not really known. Nor is it at all clear from the story whether the cyclists had a light, was observing traffic laws, etc. The reader comments, as usual, are either amusing or infuriating--or both--depending on your point of view. Anti- and pro-cycling readers are each seeing what they want to see in the situation, as usual.

At any rate, it now looks like the cyclist and driver will meet in the Hereafter and can settle it between them. Tragic all the way around . . .

As I expected . . .

. . . the reader who comments about "the WCSX guys" was referring to one of far too many incidents where radio jocks stoke some ratings by joking about--and implicitly advocating--violence by drivers against cyclists.

There's some more info about it here:

I had originally thought this was from Oakland CA, but The Oakland Press and Oakland County are suburban Detroit.

Here's a couple of links about the original hit-and-run . . .

If it was clearly my fault, I'd probably do the same thing. How'd he take his own life? Eat the barrel? Jeff N.

I feel sorry for both who died. I was considering getting a light to ride at night, I just changed my mind.

?

Do you think it was the guilt or the idea of getting caught that got to the driver?

As already stated before, just an all-around bad situation. No one wins here. My thoughts go out to both families.

Be safe out there guys.

. . . but at this point does it really matter? A tragedy for everyone involved.
