Forum member Metin Uz killed while riding a 1200 km brevet

I was shocked and very disturbed to read this tragic news reported by Rob Hawks of San Francisco Randonneurs.

https://groups.google.com/g/sfrandon/c/RlvEM6PlKSM

Quote:
While riding the Treasure Cove 1200 in Virginia, Metin Uz was struck and killed at a 3 way intersection. This was about 220 miles into the ride.

Early information is sparse and often erroneous. I will pass along what I find out when I find out.

I've ridden many miles with Metin. My only regret would be those miles I will not get to ride with him. He was the most meticulously prepared rider I know, and truly very smart on the bike.

When the time comes SFR and the whole NorCal randonneuring community will gather and remember Metin and hopefully support each other as we come to terms with our loss.

Rob
I never met Metin Uz, but I always enjoyed his posts here, especially his inspiring report of riding P-B-P on a fixed-gear: https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?p=2588513.

RIP Metin Uz. The world will be poorer for your loss.

Oh damn. This is very sad to lose one of our own. Another tragedy.

I have always aspired to do PBP fixed as a bucket list stretch goal and remember reading his ride report with huge admiration.

This is horrible news to hear.

That's so sad. For him to go out on a fixie and do rides I couldn't do with all my gears filled me with awe. Just ridiculously impressive, and it's horrible to read that it ended like this for him. He remains an inspiration to me.

The agency says the bicyclist, identified as 56-year-old Kamil Metin Uz of Palo Alto, Calif., was riding southbound on Magnet Drive at the time of the crash when he approached a stop sign. They say he failed to stop at the sign and was hit by a 2010 Acura traveling westbound on Foursquare Road.

Uz was thrown from his bike and died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries...
I wonder how the police came to this conclusion. Since this is a rural area, presumably there were no witnesses and they relied on the word of the driver.

Here's an image of the intersection: https://goo.gl/maps/JPwn775UoaTzJxXU7.

That is the very same question i was asking myself when i read the article… was there corroboration of this?

So unfortunate.

I had the good fortune to have spent many many miles with Metin, both through RUSA and CTC. He was a conscientious and meticulous rider who never really seemed to be in a foul mood, regardless of the conditions. He'd always get compliments about having a certain grace on the bicycle and you knew that if he was in your paceline, it was going to be a solid segment. He also had a huge passion for bicycles. He had a huge collection and was as much of a nerd as the rest of us in perfecting a build. And they weren't just wall hangers. No matter how "precious" or "rare", they'd all see some serious road time.

I had only seen him once since the end of 2019 when I semi-retired from randonneuring, but SFR happened to be hosting a 100k mixed terrain event last June that included some dirt. He and some fellow riders found me resting at a picnic table at West Point Inn on Mount Tam. It was fun to catch up with everyone. The joking and camaraderie in that moment made me miss the sport. One of the riders with Metin was riding a bike that was purchased by a fellow randonneur, Roy Ross. Roy sadly never got to ride the bike as he passed away from from Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in March of 2020 before taking delivery. I believe it was that bike's maiden voyage (a Moots Routt). Roy and Metin would rarely be seen apart at events and the loss of Roy I know hit Metin harder than most.

I miss them both very much.

I met Metin during PBP 2019 and rode with him for a while. For first-timers like me and my buddy Brian, he was pure inspiration. Unflappable and cheery, giving no hint he was doing something insanely difficult: riding PBP on his fixie, which for a rider as accomplished as Metin might not have been that big a deal. Later, during tough moments on that ride, we’d talk and joke about Metin pedaling his fixie up and down the Brittany hills, still cheery after 800 or 1000km, and push on harder.

This news is just devastating. I’m grateful for the memories I have of him and sad I won’t get to ride with him again.
