Lighter carbon rim = significantly faster acceleration debunked?
I just love how the manufactures try to tell you that carbon rims are lighter and accelerate significantly faster. You see those guys on those sponsored videos saying they can literally "feel" the acceleration when they go from 0 to 20mph and instantly makes you want a pair of those $3000 carbon rims.
Now if you leave your bike on a trainer without the load on and pedal from 0 to 100 rpm on 53 - 11 gear congratulations you just accelerated that rear wheel from 0 to 60mph. Now do that with a pair of $100 2000g wheels and I doubt any of us will feel the difference. It's like how the manufactures tell us that their frames are x% stiffer, Y%lighter and z%more aerodynamic compare to last year model like people were riding on spaghetti noodles 30 years ago. I don't know I just find it funny wants to share my thoughts with you guys. |

If it makes you happy buy it.
To me where this gets interesting is placebo medicine. If it's a sugar pill but your body reacts like it's a wonder drug, what is it? |

The fake news business probably started with manufacturers. It apparently caught on quick since it worked.

Most carbon wheels 'feel' like they are 'spinning up real quick', because they are stiff, not light. There is a 'flywheel effect' but it's contribution is really small and mosty lost in the noise. The energy it takes to 'accelerate' a bike is the mass of the bike and rider. If the wheels are 500 grams lighter, the energy to accelerate is less but that 500 gram savings on a really fit 74,000+ gram bike/rider 'package' is pretty small.
BUT if ya like 'em and got the $, buy them, they won't hurt your performance..just yer wallet.
