UPDATE! Marin Gestalt X11 Max Tire Size - What Am I Missing?

Recently bought my first gravel bike, a Marin Gestalt X11. It has 700x30 Schwalbe G-One tires on it, which caliper out at 31mm as mounted. Marin lists the max tire width for this rig at 35mm, yet there seems to be TONS of room for a wider tire. See pics attached. The spacing of the fork is about 58mm, with plenty of distance between the top of the tire and the bottom of the fork crown. In the back, the distance between the chainstays is about 50mm and between the seat stays is about 50mm.

Am I missing something that would limit me to a 35mm tire width? Seems like, at a minimum, I could run 38s. Thoughts?

A lot of brands list a conservative max tire size to account for variation between measured vs. labeled with of tires, measured width when mounted on various rims, and clearance for mud, etc. If there are fender mounts, the advertised size might also account for that.

There are indeed fender mounts, although I have no intention of using them. So I should be able to easily run 38mm Schwalbes, I guess? I’m considering 38mm G-One All Arounds or Hutchinson Overides.

I've also heard that there is some safety regulation that manufacturers are supposed to follow regarding the extra amount of space between the tire and frame/fork.

Thanks for the info big help.... Sitting in Denmark and want to buy the bike but it's only possible online overseas in the United Kingdom.

Can you please take a photo behind the bottom bracket from the frame too the tire?

And are the bike comfortably on longer rides? And what's the bike en generally?

Cheers from Denmark 🇩🇰

And Thanks tlarwa

How much space is between the seat tube and the tire?

How much space is between the chain stay cross and the tire?

It annoys me, but many frames are limited by these and leave wide gaps on the rest.

There’s about 8-10mm between the seat tube and the tire and 15mm or so between the chainstay cross support and the tire.

I just ordered 38mm Gravelking Slicks. I think I’ll have plenty of room, but I’ll report back to confirm.

Photos attached and more info a couple posts down. The bike is very comfortable ... I’m enjoying it very much on both tarmac and gravel. I’m looking forward to installing 38mm Panaracer Gravelking Slicks and running them tubeless later this week!

Big thanks and great fotos....

It seems like the place with the tightest space Is from the seat tube. Haven't thought about that so thanks for picture.

The 2019 gestalt x have a new seat tube perhaps for bigger wheels?

Exciting how the panaracer Tyres Wil fit the gestalt. Great. Lokking colour... Do you have a approximately weight of the gravel grinder?

Update - 38’s are mounted!

Well, I mounted 38mm Panaracer GK Slicks today (with tubes ... wanted to make sure I had clearance before mounting them tubeless). And they fit! The real concern was the clearance between the seat tube and the tire. With the rear tire at 55psi I have about 3-4mm of clearance. I don’t ride in the mud, so I’m not worried about it being that tight. Plenty of room everywhere else. But 38s are definitely the biggest I’d try to fit. By the way, the GK’s measure 38mm on my 21mm inner width rims.

As for the ride, I really like the wider tires! They seemed to roll really fast (pavement ride tonight to shake them out). I am excited to try them tubeless now ... guess that’s my weekend project.

Some pics below to show clearances and how the bike looks with 38’s on it.

Not enough clearance between the tire and the seat tube to go any wider. If the sidewall height gets any taller it’ll rub.

OK. Most push it, but I respect your OTG judgement. Paint rubbs off when you've reach the max.
