Ford, discontinuing all vehicles except the Mustang and Focus

Just curious if anyone else saw this announcement.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/busine...425-story.html

Shifting to trucks and SUVs while offering the Mustang and a crossover variant of the Focus.

I believe it is discontinuing all cars (meaning sedans), not all vehicles.

Will be great until gas spikes to $5/gallon, and then there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Considering this will be the most expensive summer travel season in years due to rising gas prices, I'm sure this will not come back to bite Ford at all.

Ford passenger cars were never anything spectacular anyway. Fusion? Taurus? Fiesta? Yawn. Gas prices are low and big trucks are selling. Why wouldn't they focus on what's selling? F150 is still the number 1 selling vehicle period, right? They will be just fine.

I don't see this as a problem for Ford. More a reflection of what they are selling. Many of the SUV's and CUV's are looking more and more like tall cars these days. And most are on the chassis of sedans. So I expect to see more "wagon" looking vehicles that get good fuel economy.

Just passenger cars. Fusion, Taurus, CMax, Fiesta. And it'll be over the next 4 years.

Wow. Wonder if the guy who named it the "Focus" has any idea how right he was.

i see this as incredibly short sighted and akin to digging their own grave.

as other manufacturers go all in on electric/hybrid (see volvo switching 100% to electric/hybrid next year), ford doubles down on only selling big gas guzzler vehicles?

I've been waiting, waiting and waiting for Ford to add some legitimate powertrain options to the Transit Connect. Turns out '19 will get a 1.5L diesel and 2.0L gas all with less power than the current 2.5L.

What a let down.

Retooling for a new tomorrow would be my guess. Can’t wait to see what replaces those lackluster vehicles. Only shocker there is the Taurus, but only because it serves as a decent police cruiser, and even those are transferring to suvs now too.

It's not like they can't bring those vehicles back if needed. This allows them to focus on a profitable segment in their line up and also frees up capital to R&D future vehicles.

In all the stories I've read, they haven't said that Ford will stop making cars (other than the Mustang and Focus), just that they will stop selling them in the US. Ford is an international company, and builds cars in and for many markets. Will they continue to build and sell cars in the rest of the world?
