Peter Norman
There's a nice piece in today's Washington Post about Peter Norman, the Australian sprinter who was on the podium in Mexico City in 1968 when the two US athletes raised their arms in a "Black Power Salute." The article is at:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...100401753.html
My favorite bit is, "...there was a time when having a social conscience superseded personal wealth and popularity in sports, a time when empowerment among elite athletes had nothing to do with economics."

I remember it like it was yesterday.
One of the most courageous acts in sports history, IMHO. My dad and I argued about it for years.

As one who loved watching the Olympics...
I was disappointed by the outrageous display.
I was young, I was swayed, and we were wrong. Terrific story.

Great article and a great story. I've seen Norman on TV together with Smith and Carlos - they were all great mates.
Peter Norman still holds the record for fastest 200m run by an Aussie. Last edited by classic1; 10-05-2006 at 10:21 PM. |
