OT: No more grid girls in Formula One

How soon before podium girls in cycling are gone?

http://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/42890261

Quote:
Charlotte Gash is a part-time grid girl, who says she is "disgusted" with F1's decision.

"It's upsetting and I'm rather disgusted that F1 have given in to the minority to be politically correct," Gash told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I'm one of the lucky ones that I don't rely on this as a main source of income, but there are girls out there who do.

"I know the grid girls are there to look pretty when they're out on the grid but my role was interacting with the crowd and we were there as an advertisement for the sponsors. We love doing it; we don't want it taken away from us."

Fully support grid and podium dogs of all breeds. Even the occasional cat if it makes sense.

Problem is gird dogs and cats, I don't think they can hold the umbrellas high enough to cover the riders/drivers. And of course no thumbs.

The cyclists themselves will be sorry when podium girls are gone.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/25/sp.../25podium.html

Quote:
“I know that more than one of my colleagues is married to a podium girl or former podium girl,” the German rider Jens Voigt said. “I could name 10 off the top of my head.”

One former hostess, Melanie Simonneau, met the American rider George Hincapie on the Tour podium in 2003. They locked eyes. And that was that...

A comment on the matter I read elsewhere, "instead of doing away with grid girls completely they could have used the position to highlight other people" Veterans, scholars, humanitarians, fundraiser winners, winners of some national award, etc. It would have been a good way to balance the tradition of grid girls with a more inclusive modern approach. I'd stand on the hot grid and hold a sign if it got me on the start line and VIP passes to the race, that's for damn sure.

That's from 2010. There are plenty of other places to meet people.

How about replacing them with a female driver or two?

Not really going to be a factor in cycling but in car racing we pretty much know they can drive with the men in most cases. Racing cars is physically demanding but not at all like cycling or lots of other more physical sports where the physical differences between men and women create unfair advantages for men.

Yeah, that is too bad for pro athletes whose identity is so connected to their professions and I feel for them, I really do. I mean where else are they going to find someone who shares the passion and love of cycling or auto racing to share their lives with?

Oh, wait. :-)
