I let it go
A few nights ago I spotted a J.P. Weigle locked up outside my supermarket. Beautiful sky gray paint with gold lettering, classic lugged steel, downtube shifters--right up my alley. The bike had seen better days, but it still boasted shiny original Campy Record hardware and was evidently a well-built machine. Left my number and a note for the owner asking him if he was interested in selling.
Met up with the guy outside work this morning. He tells me it was his graduation present ca. 1977 (!) and he's been riding the bike all these years around Boston. I proceed to ooh and ah over the vintage steel, take a tiny test ride, come back, inspect it closely until I notice a deep inch-long dent right I had missed in the bottom of the downtube. The seller was willing to part with it for very little money but I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. Oh well. Last edited by tourmalet; 11-20-2017 at 09:24 AM. |

I like that a graduation gift from 1977 would stay with the original owner. Sent and all. I bet he has some great memories and stories from 40 years on that bike.

I want to thank and acknowledge tourmalet Pal in public for helping to facilitate the sale of this bike. He went above and beyond to help a stranger in fulfilling his dream of owning a Weigle. I met Peter at D2R2 a few years ago and we had a nice conversation. He invited me to come visit him and perhaps order a bike. I was honored but I know it would be a reach budget wise. I want one but I don't think I can afford it. Fast forward to today, I am excited to be able to get help from Ed pal (tourmalet) in working with the seller directly to complete the sale, drop it off at Cambridge Bicycles for packing and then order shipping label through bike flights. Thank you Ed!
Now, waiting eagerly for the bike to arrive next Wed.

I almost expected to see a picture of it clamped by the top tube... not that it isnt, but no picture so it didn't happen.

By the length of that head tube, you must be a tall one.
