Violet Palmer and Dee Kantner were the first, both hired back in...1997. Palmer was also the first woman to ref an NBA All-Star game.

Very high level sport still has some troglodytes in the college coaching ranks and in pro team ownership, but it many ways it is a meritocracy for the players.

If there were a truly stand-out female NFL-caliber kicker or NHL-caliber goalie I bet you'd eventually see her on the gridiron or on the ice. In fact, I bet something like that will happen within the next 20 years.

Except for the stuff that's probably physically impossible (e.g. female "linepeople" in football), women are slowly catching up to men in many sports. That's doesn't mean that they'll eventually be equal, but in some cases they'll be pretty close, and where brute strength or flat-out speed aren't the only things, they may even exceed men.

she became a Russian citizen to play on their Olympics team and to make money. If true, something about that does not sit perfectly well for me. Maybe you guys know more.

She did do that. Dual citizen, I think. Many WNBA players play in RUS, because that it is the only way that they can survive, financially.

As far as the USA Olympic women's team is concerned, well...they rejected her, at least twice, and she was a great player. I see absolutely nothing wrong with her then choosing to play for RUS.

For a comparison, look up the current United States Men's National Soccer Team (which at present has a German head coach) roster's country of birth....

Regardless, she certainly has the reputation of being an elite coach.
All the power to her, imo.

Lots of men do that too, for a shot to play internationally at the Olympics. Since, yanno, USA Basketball is pretty stacked.
