Engin Cycles

Feather Cycles has been at the front of the Paceline for a while now but its time for him to pull off and let Philly based Drew Guldalian of Engin Cycles take a pull. So, this week at the front of the Paceline: Engin Cycles

Quote:
A love of the bicycle is at the heart and soul of Engin Cycles. Our mission is to build bicycles that appeal to people both as a work of craft and as a machine that can be ridden and ridden often. Thanks for visiting the site and we hope you like what you see. Each bicycle is built one at a time with a specific rider in mind. People are different, so each frame is different. Design, fit, tubes, construction method and aesthetics are all taken into consideration when building your bicycle. If you choose to have us build your new bicycle, our passion for the craft and sport will be apparent in every detail...and you will have the pleasure of riding a bicycle unique to you.

Every bicycle is made one at a time for the end user and each bicycle is unique. Bicycles can be tig welded or fillet brazed, and often a combination of the two joining methods is used. Options include made from scratch lugs and Reynolds 953 tubing. Another option is a combo of steel lugs with carbon tubes made for us by Edge Composites. All bicycle orders include the option of a fork, stem and seatpost that will get built and painted with the frame, completing the concept of a tailor-made bicycle.

Drew Guldalian, Builder and Designer

Drew was kind enough to answer a list of questions for us that are a mix of standards and member contributions...plus a few off-the-wall thrown into the mix. Our hope was to convey the builders love of their craft, hard details, and offer a few questions that bring out a bit of the human element that that helps them create the works that we love. Drew is also a member of the forum so if you have additional questions you would like to ask him about his craft, please do so.

Q. How / why did you decide to become a frame builder?

The decision was made well before the process began. I have had two fields of study my entire life. Started with restaurants which I thought would be my life but burned out and ended up in the bicycle business at the age of 23. From the moment I opened my business I had intentions of making my own bicycles. There were some missing ingredients (skill and experience) so the clock started ticking while I mastered the mechanics of the bicycle before moving onto the making of the entire unit.

Q. What influences the artistic side of your designs?

Nature. I really like an organic flow that is simple and very clean. I have very little artistic talent in the traditional sense. I can not draw, my hand writing is awful but I have good hand eye coordination and am very mechanically inclined. I do however have very specific ideas on how I like the bikes to look and try to stick with it.

Q. What is your method to determine fit?

Very little bells and whistles. If I can have a visual of the person I can almost instantly imagine the person riding a bicycle that fits them. The point of the measurements is so I can get a visual of the person. Once that is determined the rest is based on how they handle themselves and a bike. Small tweaks can have an effect that make the difference.

Q. What is it that keeps you passionate and focused?

Obsession. I am a workaholic by nature and I can not imagine life without bicycles.

Q. How many times have you burned yourself?

Only one bad burn. Digging out metal splinters is far more common.

Q. What's your favorite beer?

Currently my favorite beer is the Heady Topper from The Alchemist. I can not imagine a better beer but the fact that I can not get it locally might be part of the lust.

Heard any cool music lately?

I listen to music all day but would say the new Glen Hansard album is really good. The new Wilco album also

Q. How did you meet your spouse or significant other?

I met my wife at a function that my bicycle shop was having. Ironically she was a guest of the women I took to the event. We are all still good friends and it now seems amazing I went with the original person.

Q. What's there to do for fun in your town?

Ride bicycles?? Joking aside I think Philadelphia has one of the best restaurant scenes in America. The BYO places are out of this world.

Q. Do you put ketchup on your hotdog?

Funny question. Yes I do and it disgusts my wife.

Q. Who would you want to build a bike for you?

I have owned bicycles made by people I consider friends and a few years ago traded a bicycle with Jamie Swan as a fun project to compare notes and see what others do. I am on the list for a Sachs which is really just something I felt compelled to do for what he did in the industry as a whole. This is a hard question but I guess I would pick Nick Crumpton since I have no interest in getting into carbon and he has it very well figured out.

Q . What is it about your approach to building/designing bikes makes you unique, or separates you from the other builders out there?

I have a personality that either clicks or clashes with people. When it clicks I feel I connect in ways that others can not. I really get someone and it will find its way into the bicycle. A mojo if you must.

Q. How long is your wait list?

I leave it at one year. I am currently working on introducing Ti bikes which has consumed all my time I had in the wait for a cushion.

Q. How long have you been building frames.

I have been in the bicycle industry 17 years full time and have been making frames for 7 of them.

Q. Do you have a favorite part of the building process?

Anytime I am making something I am happy.

Q. What is the most unusual / unique bicycle you've ever built?

Hard to say. Most tandems are unusual and unique and always a welcome challenge. I love making tandems.

Q. What is your favorite non-cycling obsession?

My family.

Q. Toe-may-toe or Toe-mah-toe?

Toe-may-toe.

Many thanks to Drew for taking the time to answer our questions!

William
