What is the worst weather forecast for planning your ride?
Louis' thread got me thinking.
This year, it seems that we are experiencing the forecast, "scattered showers with an >50% chance of thunderstorms" more often than in the past. Don't know if it is just my perception, but every other week, I feel like some low pressure system parks nearby and the weather becomes super unpredictable. I don't mind rain, if it's going to be "rain during the early part of the day, moving out by 2pm, and then sunny." That is easy to plan for, just decide if you want to ride in the rain or not. With this current stuff, I listen to the weather the night before, and don't know whether to ride before or after work, or to try to take a lunch ride, and then I spend the day trying to decide when to ride, or if I should have ridden before work.

I think you have to get to know your own local weather patterns,
and using past experience make your own call using the weather tools available these days. If it's a changeable forecast, i use the on-line radar maps to see where the wet stuff is headed. We don't usually get pop up rain here, it almost always moves across, so I check a lot, and it shouldn't really be a surprise. g

Yesterday, I rode in "Thunderstorms" and, for once, the meteorologists were dead on. I got absolutely soaked to the bone and my bike got filthy.
To be fair, the hourly forecast was: 6am: Scattered Thunderstorms 7am: Thunderstorms 8am: Thunderstorms It takes me about 2h20m to get the 41 miles from home to work. I don't do it every day, but I wanted to ride yesterday, come hell or high water.

Yesterday's rain in NY/CT area was nutso. Got up early to hit the roads by 5, but opted to not take an open road shower while on bike....
 Nonstop almost all day. Ugh. Grass & garden was happy though. Quote:

5 degree F , -15 windchill or
snow squall. It isn't hard till late December or January. Everything else is a gift. HTFU

|
On your National Weather Service local home page look for a section with "Hourly Weather Graph"
It gives probability of precip hourly, along with expectation for T-storms, amounts of rain etc.. That along with looking at the weather radar for what's "upstream" is probably as good as it gets.

I'll take snow any day over a cold rainy day. I've actually had some fantastic rides in the winter when it was snowing and/or I just went riding through the snow.
A lot of this summer weather though.. who cares. You get wet. You don't feel as hot. You keep riding. It's always hard for me to set out when it's already raining but if it's 70+ degrees it doesn't bother me at all if it starts raining. I have fond memories for this one solo century I did a few years ago. It was hot when I set out. Then it rained. Then it stopped, and I dried off and it got hot again. Then it rained again, and then it stopped... the variable weather added something to the ride. Probably just because the ride had good long distance visibility and you could see the weather coming and going before it hit you.

I don't do heat (95+ with 95% humity) and humidity, so 6:AM rides are what I will plan for if it is supposed to be hot.
Otherwise, look outside, make snap decision and seize the moment.
