OT: Westminster Dog Show, sort of

I'm a shelter-dog guy, usually, but I enjoy the coverage the dog show gets every year. The winner gets to eat at Sardi's (sort of an upscale tourist trap, but with some real history to it), and I got a kick out of this photo of a past winner:

I bet he doesn't need to look at the menu, and he's probably on a first-name basis with the bartender!

I thought all civilized canines dine like this.

the lady who judged the finals is married to one of my wife's friends. I don't know much but I know I would have chosen a different winner.

That looks like Rufus! He's an English Bull Terrier (same breed I have) that I've met (he lives here in NJ).

Rufus it is! (Totally appropriate name, ATMO.)

One of the good things about pets is we can pull out all the stops when we name them, we should be so creative when it comes to kids.

+2. I was watching that live (on TV) and my jaw dropped. Would have been the Doberman for me since I own 2 and that is a great one, but there were 3 or 4 I thought were very nice picks. While I always fear the politics of the sport, I just have to hope that whatever conformation the judge felt through all that fur was really amazing.

Did anyone else notice the people trying to get onto tv in the background as they were introducing the judge for best in show? I couldn't tell if the security guard tackled one of them but you could hear a scream. Looked to be at least one woman, and they had signs that they were holding as they were being escorted away.

What makes judging best in show, and even best in group, so hard to understand is that the award is based on how close to "perfection" for that breed the competing dog gets.
So I may love Yorkshire terriers, say, and not care so much for standard poodles, but, if I'm an honest judge, I have to rate each dog against that breed's standard. How objective that standard is, of course, is subject to debate.

I wanted the German Shepard to win. So darn cute. Of course, my shelter doggie has some of that in her:
