Vanagons are awesome. Till you hit something or something hits you.

Then, they're not so awesome.

Modern vehicles: safer. And most go up a 6% highway grade faster than 48 mph, no tailwind needed.

haha

I used to drive back and forth from Chicago to Vail Co. in a 72 vanagon. 45mph was the best it could do. Loveland Pass was hilarious and scary being passed by huge rigs in low gear creeping past us. Surreal...

Said you needed a football helmet for safety

I had a '68 van set up as a camper. I loved it but was never so happy as when I traded it in at a dealer in 1984. Naturally, now reading this thread I get nostalgic again.

haha, reminds me of the two happiest days of a boaters life. the day he buys the boat and day he sells it.

I once witnessed the aftermath of a head on collision in which a van was involved. Vowed never to get in one after that.

i posted that because i have a few miles behind the wheel of a vanagon.

never hit something in one though, but man....it was on the forefront of my mind every time i climbed in one, as driver or passenger.

i prefer a crumple zone vs. nostalgia, thank you.

vanlife

I always equated riding in a VW van as riding in a marshmallow.
Absolutely no protection built into them.

VW Vans were one of the few vehicles I could beat to the tunnels with a 4 cylinder 1990 Izuzu Trooper. Both are really practical vehicles but poor choices for mountain driving especially in crosswinds.

I drove across about 300 miles of I-70 through Kansas one year right after they ran the machine that puts grooves in the road before resurfacing. We were heading west into a 20 MPH headwind the entire way. It was like sailing a shed across ice on skateboard wheels. I hated that so much :-)
