DT Swiss prebuilt wheel hubs question - model is X1600!

More wheel questions:

My son's commuter has a set of 26er DT Swiss prebuilts that have DT240 on the hub shell in faint grey lettering. These look to be maybe 12-15yrs old.

Update is that they are DT X1600. I havent taken them apart to see what the condition is, but true to most DT hubs, they seems to work great.

I am about to sell this bike as he has out grown it and has now moved to a bigger wheel size. I could sell the bike as-is, but part of me wants to take those wheels apart and harvest the hubs, and put a pair of $75 wheels on the bike to complete the sale.

Is it worth it? Are old DT240 hubs the same good quality as the new ones? I have a bike that they could be used on (QR disc).

No photos of the wheels, but they have the shape of the modern DT hubshells, standard black, J-bend spokes, 28h, and with skinny XC 26" rims.

If they have a serial number, check DT Swiss’ site or reach out to their customer service. They are incredibly helpful.

They are not Hugi (that I saw when I looked). The '240' looks like the classic red logo, only in ghosted grey.

If they are star ratchet and convertible to 36t, then they are pretty functional for converting into a set of 700c gravel road wheels, to my eye.

I recently mentioned this in another thread: I own 4 sets of wheels with DT Swiss 240S hubs, none of which are more recent than 2015, and the oldest (and most frequently used) of which are from 2009 and 2010. And they all work great. These hubs will definitely outlive me.

Hmm, the stickers are black and red with red creating a + symbol? Could the “grey” be foil/reflective? Do they say radial under the 240s on the front hub and ratchet system on the rear hubs? I don’t think any 240 hubs came with a pawl system those get a different number.

I'd absolutely swap those wheels, as there's no profit in selling.anything.high end in a 26er

The rear hubs have been unchanged since the silver Hugo days.

There are a couple of possible configurations for the front hub

Current model spare parts will fit, including the 36 and 54 tooth ratchets

I seem to recall that early Hugi hubs only had one floating ratchet, unlike the 240s that had both ratchets float.

Am I correct in thinking that?

Remember, 240 are now EXP, which is not compatible with S.

Yes, the original Hugi hubs have only one ratchet that floats laterally. That ratchet has a spring behind it that pushes it to engage. The other ratchet is loosely pressed into the hub and doesn't move.

BTW my rain bike has original Hugi hubs from 1997. I replaced the bearings last year after 20,000 miles. DT Swiss tech support was awesome: I asked them for a new seal and they were so excited that 25 year old hubs were still rolling, they sent me new ratchets and seals for free.

update: I finally looked at the model of the wheels in question: X1600.

Here is a link to some that are for sale - they're the exact same set, same axles (and I use a QR converter on the front)

https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/2670920/

So, it looks like these are 18t star-ratchet. I rode with him to school this AM and they are rumbling away, sounding nice and healthy.
