Shimano 11 spd on MTB 10 spd freehub

I'm out of my element here (10 spd Campy guy) and a buddy bought a new disc gravel bike with Ultegra 11 spd and a 700c wheelset. He's interested in adding a 650b wheelset and I've offered him mine built with 10 spd XT hubs.

What do we need to know?

- Would he have to live with a Shimano MTB 11 spd cassette of 11-40 or greater? Any options with a large cog in the 30's?
- Would he need to add a goat link?
- Would he need a longer cage or MTB rear derailleur?
- Just avoid this scenario and get a wheelset built with 11 spd hubs?

Thanks in advance.

Shimano sells an 11-34 cassette in the Ultegra R8000 (CS-HG800) and 105 R7000 (CS-HG700) series that is designed specifically for this application. If he has a GS (medium) cage rear derailleur, even 6800/5800 series, no other modifications would be needed, outside of a correctly sized chain.

This also presumes your hubs have the same axle standards as his frame - QR front/rear, 12mm front, 15mm front, 12mm rear, etc.

Yup, 15mm x 100mm & 12mm x 142mm. That's why I offered them up, I have a new frameset with 12mm x 100mm in the queue.

OK, touched base with my buddy and he DOES want to run an 11-40. With that in mind, what does he need (yes he currently has the GS medium rear der.).

So the Roadlink will allow him to run the 11-40, but to go larger he'd need the MTB rear and Tanpan correct?

How does the Roadlink setup perform when paired with a road cassette?

BUT to answer your question, except for those 2 ‘road’ cogsets, an 11s cogset won’t fit onto any 10s shimano/sram MTB FHB.

Sunrace makes quite a few 11 speed cogsets that work on 10s mtb. I'm running an 11-36 with my Ultegra RX FD.

You might be able to get away with 11-40 with an RX, R7000 GS, or R8000 GS rear.

Presuming 1x drivetrain, probably so. I'd think it would be too much chain to tension if also accounting for multiple chainrings.

and for others searching out information, for those who want to get really wacky, Rotor's 11speed 11-28 cassette fits on 10sp s-group freehubs.

Ultegra 8000 and 8050 GS (and presumably the 105 7000 GS) will clear the 11-40 cassette on many bikes without the addition of a WolfTooth RoadLink extender.

If he has the GS rear mech already, give it a try before adding the RoadLink.
