I don't mean to overlook his own racing career, but I can't help but love this photo of him and his grandson Mathieu van der Poel on the podium. It seems to speak to his worlds family and cycling and their intertwined threads. He himself said something along the lines of "I was unlucky, but the bike gave me more than it cost me". For that, I think we can all empathize.

He was loved by many, but most of all by his compatriots in the Limousin, where we now find ourselves often. Here's another obit, in French, from the local paper. The bit about Antequil's deathbed murmer is priceless... to be able to make joke at that moment, and to know it would be received well. Chapeau to a life well ridden, Poupou.

One of the legends that make bike racing more than just a sport. Chapeau.

sometimes it ain't all about winning...classic very old school guy...no hot models or dinner at the palace with De Gaulle for Raymond...these guys from that golden age are almost all gone...most will be soon I would imagine...
