Exploding inner tubes

Had an inner tube that mysteriously went flat last night on my wife's bike. Took it out to inspect and had pumped it up and was trying to listen for the hiss when a loud pop happened!

Never seen this before!

Oh I've seen it before.

A few different time Kenda and maybe Bontrager tubes that were blowing up at the seam near the valve stem. I recall it happening three times one week. That's a lot getting the **** scared out of you and everyone else in the shop. I HATE that.

Totally scared me! I had my ear close to the tube when listening for the hiss. Glad the explosion occurred further down the tube or my ears might've gotten some damage

The only time that’s happened to me was when I installed a tube and a bit of it got pinched under the bead. I didn’t notice and continued to pump the tire. Went inside and (strangely), later that night....

Kaboom. Sounded like a shotgun. But I could clearly see where the tube blew out as the tire was unseated.

EDIT: OH, the tube was out of the tire. Never mind.

I bet you had a very small hole somewhere, which caused it to lose air. You took the tube out, pumped it up, but the local stress concentration at the hole was too much and you got instant "crack" propagation from the hole and everything blew from there.

Probably! Just glad nothing happened when we were riding on Wednesday!

Instant and catastrophic tube failure is highly unlikely if it's fully contained by the tire and wheel, so I wouldn't worry about it. This was a "lab failure" not a real-world event.
