Can you use Hydro Brifters with Mechanical Calipers

Hi - I have a shimano 105 group with hydro (ultegra) brakes and want to move this group over to a bike with cantis.... will these brifters work with mechanical brakes?

Man, I wish all internet forum questions were as efficiently handled as this thread.

There's still plenty of time for some thread drift. I've got $5 that says someone will eventually recommend Zondas, a steel frame, or down tube shifters.

POTD.

I also strongly dislike the word "brifters". Lets burn a few pages on that.

Hmm ... all you'd need is a way to convert hydraulic force into mechanical force somewhere above the straddle cable carrier, right? Hydraulic-to-cable.

There's no reason this can't be solved in a way that's custom machined, overly complicated, and prohibitively expensive.

Edit: and resulting in a braking upgrade that is, let's say, debatable?

Isn't there a hydro derailleur someone made? Maybe these hydro brifters can work on hydro derailleurs?

Maybe you're thinking of the Rotor Uno hydraulic drivetrain? This system was hydaulic end-to-end (hydraulic shifters and derailleurs), with no mechanical cables.

There are also cable actuated hydraulic disc calipers. These run mechanical cables from the lever to the caliper, and then the cable actuates a hydraulic master cylinder in the caliper. But this is the opposite of what the OP was askig about.

Perhaps what the OP wants to do is use rim brakes with hydraulic levers? Then he/she might want to investigate hydraulic rim brake systems, as have been made by SRAM and Magura.

I suppose if you wanted to shift with your brake levers and brake with your shift levers WHAT COULD GO WRONG

It’s like switching your brake levers moto style, but taken too far. Noto?

When I read the original post I thought it was a delayed April Fool joke.

If someone successfully kickstarted a hydro to linear cable pull converter would hydro-levered cantilevers be better or worse than cable-actuated discs?

I think I remember (gets iffier every year) that BMW motorcycles in the 1977-1985 era had hydraulic brakes with the master cylinder mounted to the frame but actuated by a cable from a traditional lever on the handlebar. Rube Goldberg must have loved it.

Giant literally does this. It's called the Conduct system and it sucks to work on.

I know this is just a joke but I think you could run full hydro V brakes with Shimano road levers and Magura hydro V brake calipers

Paging Jan Heine - This is a product niche that is begging to be exploited!
