Can you convert Record 9 speed levers to 11?

Think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway.

Can you take Record 9 speed levers and swap guts to make it 11 speed?

There were rumors (when 11s was rather new) about this beeing done by putting in an 11s ring but i never saw anyone who actually claimed they did so. And tbh if it were possible we would see a lot of record 9 speed levers with upgraded parts on many campy bikes that demanded silver parts. Yet there are none to be seen .) Sad tho i would have had a bike or 2 with 10 speed levers on an 11s system if possible.

im talking about 10s levers ofc but those are the same shape as the later 9s levers (the 9s levers who can be upgraded to 10 that is. so same principe would apply).

Potatoe will hopefully chime in, but...

1998 saw the intro of Ergo V2 shaped 9s levers. The Record version had aluminum blades and these are NOT upgradeable.

1999, the levers went to carbon, stayed 9s... I think these ARE upgradeable.

But to 10, not 11.

Well...

There was a guy that actually made an index ring for 10 speed levers that went to 11. It was completely aftermarket and I’ve only heard one case of one being installed, but I was in direct contact with the person that made it and nearly bought one.

And in theory, with this part and some creativity, both early and late 9 speed levers “could” be upgraded. I converted my pointy top 8 speed levers to 10 speed. With the aftermarket part above, I could have gone to 11. It would be impractical and expensive, but I guess it could be done.

No sir..when I was in the trenches, about 2011 or so, a guy sent me a 11s shift disc for 2008 and older, non gumby levers..no idea where it went nor what happened to it.

1998, yes the levers were 9s only. 1999, with the advent or ERGO brain, the innards changed..from shift disc to thru bolt, springs, etc. It WAS possible to convert 1998 levers to 10s but it took swapping nearly all the innards..the bodies were the same. Possible but pricey.

I heard about the guy that changed the disc to make the 10s levers work with 11s, but being that nothing ever really happened I doubt it really existed.

With 3D printing the way it is now though, I really do wish that someone would do it.

Someone is doing it for 12 speed sram. I think there was a thread here. Pretty cool, even though the parts have miserable surface finish.

Look above, old potato had one.

There was also information online in the era from someone that installed one. They existed, but numbers have got to be very low and quality is unknown. The video the guy send me did look pretty convincing.
