Shimano 7710 Octalink bb for rain/snow rides?
Hello all. Iโve used Campy Record cranks and Sram Omnium cranks on builds ridden in all weather(rain, snow, etc). If I used Shimano 7710 cranks would the bb be susceptible to water affecting performance?
Iโve never used them and I could either A.) Swap a set of omniums onto the intended build B.) Use a set of Campagnolo Record cranks Thanks |

not if you use a 6500 BB

The octalink BBs come in two flavors: sealed cartridge and cup and cone.
Sealed cartridge won't give you problems and cup and cone can last forever but will require maintenance (disassemble, clean and regrease about twice a year). |

Honestly thatโs more maintenance than Iโd like ๐๐๐

And the maintenance of that Dura Ace BB is problematic as the aluminum is soft IMO. So disassembly/reinstall is dicey as wrenches can easily slip and damage the interfaces. It's just not a good system when compared to other options. Get the Ultegra sealed cartridge style, apply grease liberally to everything during install then forget it.

Get the sealed cartridge bb and be happy
cup and cone is for keirin riders who wanna squeeze out every last watt of efficiency. |

The 7710 bottom bracket is sealed like the 6500; it does not have cup/cone/bearings like the 7700. The 7710 differs from the 6500 in that the threaded adaptors are steel. Search for user 11.4 on this subject for his useful insights.

Yup..7710 is pista stuff..well done james. 'Interesting' design by shimano when in pista, 'some' BBs were injected with oil rather than grease for smoothness and effortless 'drag'..the 7710, with cart bearings and seals..were not this.

I've actually got that tool and still managed to have it slip off. I'm not the best mechanic. Some part + tool combinations are more idiot proof than others.

I have the tool, yet a 7710 BB + Italian threads + some loctite to keep it in place .. that still equals a messy situation. Would have been avoided entirely by using the 6500 BB. |
