I think over/under appreciated rather than over/under "rated" is more to the point. There are lots of artists that are rated highly by critics and small numbers of music fans but don't sell many albums and are off the general public's radar. Richard Thompson is a good example. Another (in the USA) is Paul Kelly. Despite several top ten albums in Australia and good reviews of his albums he has never caught on to any great extent in the USA.

Not much of a video (1986) but a great song.

For me there are some generational issues at play - there are so many bands listed that I have never even heard of. And I imagine that bands like Flying Burrito Bros., Edgar and Johnny Winter, Roy Buchanan, Jeff Beck, Gram Parsons, maybe even some such as the Doors, J. Airplane, Big Bro and the Holding co. - Janice Joplin, Kinks, NRPS etc have not been appreciated by the younger generation.

Journey. They're basically a cover band these days.
Metallica... they always have resting metal face.
Chili peppers.... just don't get it.

Underrated

Music is so subjective....you either like something or you don't. I could list a number of popular bands that I don't like, and hence think are overrated, but others do like them....

I think Journey starting with their 4th album (which most people think is their 1st album) is terrible for the most part.....and that's when Steve Perry joined the group. But those first 3 albums were great and their first album (just titled "Journey") is easily in my top 5 albums of all time. If you haven't heard it you should give it a listen, it's nothing like the stuff that made them well known.

Kansas & Chicago

Under appreciated
The musicianship of Kansas and Chicago (before they got all soft pop) was unmatched by any of their contemporaries. These guys broke new ground and did it with excellence. Song for America is still the best piece of music I have ever heard.

Overrated
Like what you like and enjoy, not pooping on anyone.

These are cover bands but I feel they should be checked out on YouTube. Foxes and Fossils. Excellent band and vocals, many of their videos are made in a taco joint parking lot. So good though. Also, Leonid and Friends. Do a lot of Chicago covers as well as Earth, Wind, and Fire. Probably better than the current Chicago line up. And finally, the Hindley Street Country Club. Cover band from Australia. Very good band and great vocals, especially when the ladies sing lead. Check them out!

Both bands had excellent musicians, but 'unmatched'? Eh...I can't agree, but then we're back to opinions.

Definitely under appreciated IMO - Yes. And I would put the musicians there up against anyone when it comes to skill and talent.
