Bike shopping for a friend
A friend of mine who is recently retired an 70 years old asked me about a new road bike. His current bike is a 1990s Allez Epic.
We used to to ride together a lot but he has not ridden much for a long time but is in decent shape from other activities. The first thing that came to my mind is a Specialized Aethos. I am not sure if it might be too aggressive for him or not. They are some pretty good deals right now on the Ultegra Di2 version ($4600) I think this is a good starting point. Any others to consider? |

I don’t know your friend and how fit he is. But I’d definitely look at some of the endurance bikes as well. Roubaix or Domane.

I think I remember hearing the older Allez bikes weren't super aggressive, no? Having tested an Aethos, it's better than a Tarmac, but I thought was still a touch too aggressive for me.. depends on your friend's fitness/flexibility, but I'd agree to looking at a bit more of an endurance bike and maybe even a gravel bike..

Most racing geometry makes little sense for non-racers let alone a 70 yo one. For off the peg bikes I would suggest Giant Defy or Canyon Endurace.

Roubaix, unless...
he's way more fit than me.

That's a great price for a great bike.
But make sure he likes the fit and can handle that fit for the duration of the ride. Quote:

Canyon Endurace. Di2. Upgrade the wheels. 32mm tires. That is my only carbon bike and it works for me.
I'll take an Aethos if one falls out of the sky. They look great IMO. |

Age is a number not a bike fitting scale. Go try an Aethos and whatever else you can.
Have fun nice to help a friend. |

The Vaast A1 is a good deal if he wants an allroad bike!

Yeah, what he said. Friend should go to some local shops, try a bunch of bikes, and buy the one he likes best --from the shop he tried it at.
