I'm not a strong rider by any standard, and when I ride up Diablo, I ride non-stop at a very relaxed pace. Last time it took me one-hour, forty-nine minutes. Yazolino must have been a strong rider to do it in under an hour. Here's my last ride up:

Rohan Dennis holds the KOM at 38:36, 5 seconds ahead of Lawson Craddock.

My last effort up Diablo was slower than that.

1 hour is the benchmark. But it depends on whether he climbed up the north or south road and where he started the measurement from. But, under a hour is impressive even if he started counting at the official entrance to the park.

I think an average shape rider cruising goes up in about 1:12-1:25

Yes predominantly 30 plus year old riders however yesterday there was a large group of high school mountain bikers from Danville heading up and a couple of months ago I saw a dad with three young kids, all in full kit and tiny bikes all under age ten riding to the top and passing loads of riders.

For years hardly ever saw any kids (other than a rare appearance by my kids) so the last three or four years have seen a slight uptick in younger riders. It helps that the local schools have mtb racing teams now.

I’m 45 and regularly drop much younger cyclists on long climbs. Fifty isn’t exactly old anymore.

Yep, reading comprehension test. Maybe that declines with age?

He never would have been able to do this if not for his carbon bike.

Ahh to be 45 again, I think that was my peak fitness age.

If I see someone riding up Diablo fixed, who is at least 75, then maybe that gets a chapeau, depending on his pace.

I rode the Giro dolomiti a couple of times, it is a 6 day event for amateurs/hobbyists with a mountain time trial on every day on one of those famous climbs - pordoi, stelvio, fedaia, you name it. A lot of talented riders do it, all the local young aces... And every single year I competed, everyone got their asses kicked by a 50ish dentist named Anderlini.

This is very inspirational for me. I just turned 62, and have never attempted to ride up Mt. Diablo.

Not getting this.. I was there when Ned Overend podiumed Mt. Washington to celebrate his 50th birthday.

I think he did it again on his 60th.

Is Mt. Diablo even hard? The Strava routes put it under 7%.

ISTR one of the times I did Mt. Washington there was a finisher over 80.

Sarcasm? There are tons of strong cyclists in their 50s and 60s.
