I've recently begun listening to Spotify. I thought it would be better at suggesting new songs, but it mainly thinks I want to listen to Tom petty, Paul Simon and smattering of other folks like Allman Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, etc.

I guess I need to go in and add more songs that I like, so it can get to know me better.

Classic rock is great. The music today is barely music by comparison. The hooks and compositions they wrote back then actually took time and talent. Today it is all obvious chord progressions.

My grandfather still listened to Dean Martin and Perry Como until the day he died, and couldn't wrap his mind around rock music.

When I work part time in a nursing home (I do it because I really love my residents and I need an escape from the reality of emergency medicine... My residents may die, but they die with dignity... Oh how I wish the same were true in the ER and out on the street... I digress) one of my joys is playing music from whatever 'generation' of resident I am working with happens to like. I have 'grandparents' in their 90's down to their 50's... a wide range of music. One truth: All of them have memories associated with their music, it is amazing to watch the transformation in an Alzheimers patient when you play Perry Como... Music definitely evokes strong emotions. It brings out the humanity in all of us.

My Dad, a Dixieland and Big Band fan, also Hawaiian slack key guitar. One day we were getting out of the family truckster in a beachfront parking lot on the Central California coast. The guy parked next to us is listening to a nice guitar jam. Dad says to me that he really likes the music, sounds like slack key guitar. So he asks the guy what it is. Jimi Hendrix is the response. Dad goes on a rant, to me, about how horrible Hendrix is......

Studies have shown that we form our tastes in music at an early age - typically in the early teens. So your favorite type of music depends largely on when you were born.

I must be a late bloomer, as my taste in music formed closer to my college years. Which is a probably a good thing, since the most popular music when I was a teenager was disco (and it's been proven beyond doubt that disco sucks!).

So strange. I find I have grown to love many different kinds of music I never listened to until MUCH later in life - Metal being one... Big Band being another... An interest in math led to physics that led to music theory... and suddenly most forms of music have an appeal... I still struggle with modern R&B and rap... but I do appreciate it.

https://www.businessinsider.com/why-...-age-30-2018-6

"In 2015, the Skynet & Ebert blog looked at data from US Spotify users and Echo Nest. On average, teen music taste was dominated by popular music, then this steadily dropped until people's tastes "matured" in their early 30s. By age 33, it was more likely they'd never listen to new music again."

The sense of community from pirate and illegal-non commercial stations was so awesome.
Miss it.

It's still my favorite station though it's not like it was back in the day.

KSHE still plays Alice's Restaurant on Thanksgiving, so at least classic rock radio is good for something.
