What´s the deal w/ top swing derrailleurs ?

Those things develop play in the cages unlike the old style bottom swing which last and last. I have 2 top swing shimano derr and both have the dreaded play.

Is this designed into these things? The other bikes w/ an old style bottom swing have no play and shift faster.

Both XT and LX. Same play. It makes me think it´s by design... but i use thumbshifters and on another bike w/ a traditional bottom swing unit i have no play and smoother less effort more precise thumbie action.
